The July Lamplighter

The Lamplighter

July 2007

From the Pastor’s Desk
And so I insist – and God backs me up on this – that there be no going along with the crowd, the empty-headed, mindless crowd. They have refused for so long to deal with God that they’ve lost touch not only with God but with reality itself. They can’t think straight any more. Feeling no pain, they let themselves go in sexual obsession, addicted to every sort of perversion.
More...

But that’s not life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him, been well instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything – and I do mean everything – connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life - a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.
What this adds up to then is this: no more lies, no more pretense. Tell your neighbor the truth. In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself.  Go ahead and get angry. You do well to be angry – but don’t use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don’t stay angry. Don’t go to bed angry. Don’t give the devil that kind of foothold in your life.
Did you make ends meet by stealing? Well, no more! Get an honest job so that you can help others who can’t work. Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.
Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.  Make a clean break with all cutting, backbiting, profane talk. Be gentle with one another, sensitive. Forgive one another as quickly and thoroughly as God in Christ forgave you.                        Ephesians 4:17 – 32   The Message

  Church Board Report
Because the church Board meeting was scheduled later than usual this month (6/24), that meeting did not take place until after the deadline for articles for this newsletter. A report will be included in next month’s Lamplighter.
 Brandon Grady Update
As most everyone knows, Brandon is serving a summer internship at the Conestoga Church of the Brethren near Leola (that’s Lancaster County) for the entire summer as part of his Seminary experience. Part of his responsibilities for this time is preaching, and the dates that the Church has set aside for his preaching are as follows: June 17th, July 15th, and August 26th.  If you would like to attend any of those Worship times at Conestoga in support of Brandon, you’ll need to know that Worship begins at 10:15 AM every Sunday morning. Carpool anyone?

  Bible Challenge Questions
1. Does the Bible say we should carry each other’s burdens or that each one should carry his own load?
2. When Jesus was asked what one must do to inherit eternal life, what was his response?
3. On what occasion, and to whom, did Jesus say, “Go and do likewise.”?

Sunday School News
Join us for the summer series of Sunday School studies. The International Lesson Class is using the lesson book “Committed to Doing Right” as a basis for discussion and learning. Most of the lessons are based on Scripture from the minor prophets of the Old Testament, and it is amazing how relevant they are to our life and life situations today. We will look at what it means to really be committed to doing what the Bible says is right. Join us for some challenging and exciting times of fellowship, study, and learning.
            The Discussion Class will continue to be working on Philip Yancey’s popular book The Bible Jesus Read.  It’s an eye-opening study of the Old Testament and how those old stories are so very relevant to our lives today. Be sure to join them.
            The Young Adult Class continues to meet in the Library under the leadership of Ralph Miller with their own chosen study topics. There are also classes for Youth, Jr Hi, and children.

Mission and Service News
July is Global Food Crisis Month. With so many unfortunate and hungry in the world, how can we not each do our part in helping to eradicate this growing problem? Please consider contributing to this worthy endeavor, marking your offering envelope accordingly.

In addition, MACOB has purchased a heifer for the Disaster Relief Auction and we will be collecting to pay for her purchase. We need to collect $1700 to cover the cost of Faith. (What an appropriate name!)  Let’s see if we can support our “Faith” – and more!

Women’s Fellowship News

July 10 – Trip to New Windsor – 9:30 AM
July 23 – Brethren Home volunteer Day – 9 AM
Women’s Camp at Camp Eder was outstanding with the largest attendance ever. Five of us went and enjoyed food, fun, and fellowship. Bernice Wagner was inspirational with “Hospitality from A – Z.”
We plan to make a day trip to New Windsor on July 10th   to deliver the ‘Health Kits.’ We will be leaving the Church at 9:30 AM with stops at The International Gift Shop and lunch at Baugher’s Restaurant. You can still donate money toward shipping costs. Thanks.
Outreach for June was $100.00 toward the purchase of the heifer for Disaster relief and $200.00 to Camp Eder.
 A Victory Won
Death, a stepping stone into heaven-                        Not gained by our own merit -
If we think of it that way;                             How famous or well we are known;
Passing from this life to the next –                A gift of grace through Jesus –
Entering the joy of eternal day.                     We inherit our heavenly home.

We need not fear its coming  –                     Think of it then as a promise-
As heaven’s portals open wide;                    Given to us through God’s only son;
When Jesus lives in our heart –                    Who paid the price for us all -
We’re sure to reach the other side.”              Through Him “a victory won.”
