From the Pastor’s Desk

Change; change; more change. As much as we humans fight change, it is a constant part of our lives. With the single exception of the Word of God alone, everything must and does change. The next big change for MACOB will begin the first of April 2010. By action of the Church Council, we have approved the sharing of our Worship facility with another congregation – The House of Restoration Ministries.

The Leadership Team and others involved in the development of our access agreement with Restoration Ministries are very excited about the potential for ministry and growth made possible by this agreement to share our facility. We know there will be many details to work out over time, but we are excited about working together.

One big change will be in our Sunday schedule. Our schedule will remain basically the same as before, at least until the close of Worship. Restoration Ministries will begin their Worship time at 12 noon. Since our Worship usually concludes about 11:30, there will be about ½ hour between Worship services, allowing for some intermingling of the two congregations. We are hopeful that we can share part of that time together during the time we usually use for refreshments.

Restoration Ministries will maintain an office here. Plans are for us to clean out the attic storage space above the office area in the front of the Church. RM will finish that area and use it for their office space. We will also share the facility for weekday and evening activities. Thus, we will have to work out a schedule for which rooms may be available for what activities. We intend to have a small committee of folks from each congregation working together to facilitate the scheduling of activities.

RM is a smaller congregation (40 – 50) of multi-racial make-up with mostly young families with children. We are excited about the possibilities while at the same time well aware that it will mean exercising some patience as we work out schedules and meetings and activities. As Christian brothers and sisters together we want to be sure to welcome them and make them feel at home with us as we work together for the furthering of God’s Kingdom.

Change. It can be scary, and even unhandy at times, but the possibilities for learning and growth are endless.

Leadership TeamThe Leadership Team met on March 7, 2010, and acted on the following items: heard from the Endowment Fund representative that the EF is working on a request procedure for disbursing funds; moved to recommend to Council for the approval of Restoration Ministries’ use of our facility; approved the hiring of Evan Brickner as our accompanist; noted that Wanda Linebaugh will lead the Prayer Chain, Barb Shoff will be contact for Brethren Home, and Gloria Miller will mail bulletins to shut-ins; work has begun on VBS

(possibility of working with ‘little green church’); egg hunt in planning stages; more small groups possible, including a parenting group and gardening group; noted schedule for Easter Sunday, Lovefeast, and Golden Age Dinner. Also looked at letters to be sent to inactive members prior to new Directory printing; possibility of Kim and Ralph preaching on a more regular basis; participation in the production of a District video. Nurture Team News

An Easter Egg Hunt is in the planning stages for Saturday morning, April 3. Please see Brenda Laughman if you can help. A hunt for the Youth will be held Saturday night (after dark – flashlights!!). Also, work has already begun for VBS  this summer. Again, many volunteers will be needed to make this a success. See Brenda to determine how you can serve.  Sunday school classes continue with some very interesting and challenging times of learning and discussion. Are you a part of a class on a regular basis? Don’t miss this great opportunity.

Ministry Team News

With the help of the Leadership Team, Ministry will be working on a schedule that will get both Pastor Kim and Ralph into a regular preaching rotation. With the hiring of Evan as our Accompanist, our music team is getting used to a new routine, at least until we can locate a Music Coordinator. For now, Brenda Linebaugh and Evan, with input from others, are coordinating things quite well. Let’s give them our support and encouragement in this important facet of our Worship as they work together to help us all experience great times of Worship together.

In addition to serving a week as volunteer counselor at Camp Eder, Pastor Godfrey has been asked to serve as Camp Pastor for a week in June. Vacation times for him will likely include a week in May (hiking the AT) and a week in August (mountains).

Women’s Fellowship News

• We will meet with our sisters from Bermudian/Lakeview on Tuesday, April 7^th at 10 AM. There will be devotions, entertainment and lunch.

• We continue to meet the first Tuesday of each month and all women are welcome. At the present time we are assembling Health Kits after our meetings.

• Bermudian/Lake View ladies are invited to spend the morning with us on Tuesday, April 13^th. There will be entertainment and lunch starting at 10 AM.

• The Women’s Spring Luncheon will be held Saturday, April 24^th at Greencastle COB. We have several ladies who plan to attend. The time is 9 AM – noon and the guest speaker is Lu Ann Wise.

• As we plan ahead, the Mother-Daughter Banquet is Tuesday, May 11^th at 6 PM. The entertainment will be Judy Smithy, who will play the part of the “Shumanite Women.” This will be a covered dish with meat furnished.

• Remember The Lehman Center Auction to be held on Tuesday, April 27^th at the 4 H Center. Food, antiques, theme baskets and much more will be offered for auction. If you have items to donate, please contact Phyllis at 848.9515.

Probably one of the best known verses in the Old Testament is the one found in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.” This promise was given to Solomon, and the people of Israel, at the time of the dedication of the temple. But I don’t think it would be a misuse of Scripture to claim it as a promise that God would make to all of his people at all times. It seems especially applicable to our situation in the US today. Every year in the US …..

• over 957,000 marriages end in divorce
• over 15,000 people are murdered
• nearly 1,800,000 pregnancies are aborted

Have we forgotten God’s call upon us and His promises for us when we obey His Voice?

if my people – We all consider ourselves to be children of God, so he’s talking to us.

who are called by my name – children of God; Christians; God’s family

will humble themselves – When and where did we ever get the idea we didn’t need God? “Arrogance points     a finger at the problem; humility points a finger at self and admits to being part of the problem.”

and pray – Prayer in its truest sense and definition is an admission that we are not in control – God is.

Should we not act that way and acknowledge His sovereignty and pray ?

and seek my face – When was the last time we truly sought to be close enough to God to see him?

and turn from their wicked ways – probably the most difficult thing any of us would do, for two

reasons: we don’t consider ourselves wicked – we’re good people, and to turn from an established lifestyle is really difficult

then will I hear from heaven – Sure, God hears us all the time, but you know what he means.

and will forgive their sin – Oh, yes, we’re good people, but we’re good at sinning and trying to cover

it. “God despises sin. God deals with sin. Our task is to be honest about our sin.”

and will heal their land – Our great land is desperately in need of a healing in many ways and we are

fully aware of that.

Max Lucado has written a short book titled Turn in which he breaks this promise of God into several parts – all involving a necessary turn on our part. Perhaps one of our small groups (or maybe even several) would be well-advised to study this short book to see where each one of us can contribute to the healing of our land through the healing of our own spiritual lives first. Perhaps we all need to turn and realize God’s glory, turn to God in prayer, turn toward His Word, and turn to Him in repentance.  “If God’s people deliberately, strategically, intentionally, ceaselessly lifted this country to God in prayer, what might happen?”

Special Worship for Lent & Easter

Our annual Palm Sunday Lovefeast & Communion will be shared on Sunday evening, March 28^th, at 6:00 PM. This special invitation to share the Lord’s Table is one of the unique Brethren ordinances we hold dear and continue to practice in spite of our modern society’s neglect of traditional Biblical activities. This moving Worship has been largely abandoned even by many Brethren folks in recent years as being no longer relevant to our faith, or as being too modernized for convenience and therefore irreverent and/or unbiblical, and devoid of its meaning and purpose (none of which is true).  Nevertheless, the invitation from Jesus to commune with Him at His Table still is extended, and the faithful still come to be challenged anew to wash the feet of a society stained by sin and apathy. The invitation is open to all believing Christians to worship at His table, share a meal with fellow believers, wash the feet of a brother or sister, and identify with our Risen Savior as we eat the Bread and drink the Cup of Christ’s body, sacrificed for us. “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who believe, it is the power of God.” Come and experience the power.

Also, on Friday, April 2^nd at 7 PM, we will gather for Worship in observance of Good Friday. Our schedule for Easter Sunday morning will be: Sunrise Worship at 6:00 (at the Kissinger’s – dress warmly!), breakfast at 8:15 in the Fellowship Hall, regular Sunday school at 9:00 and Worship Celebration at 10:15AM.

Night of Music – Support for Haiti

There will be an all-music night at the Newville Church of the Brethren on Sunday night, March 7^th at 7:00 PM. Vocalists and vocal and choral groups from many SOPA District congregations will attend and participate in this night of music. A Love Offering will be accepted during the program with all of the donations going directly toward the second week of meat canning for relief in Haiti. More info (or if you’d like to participate as part of the program) is available by calling Pastor Hess of the Newville Church at 717-776-0836.  A great night of music for a great cause.

Special Offering for March

One Great Hour of Sharing is a special relief agency of the Church of the Brethren. Since its origin, 61 years ago in 1949, OGHS has been a key channel through which our Church has supported ministries of relief aid, hunger response, and disaster aid and refugee service. Among the General Board programs supported by OGHS are development work in Sudan, disaster relief projects at home and abroad, rebuilding war-torn lives and buildings in Afghanistan, rural health care in Nigeria, oversight of the Global Food Crisis Fund, and many other relief and development projects around the world. On March 14^th, we all have the opportunity to share in this vital mission ministry of our denomination.

Nurture Team News

A new quarter of Sunday School classes begins on March 1^st. Be sure to be a part of one of them. The International Lessons class meets in the Reynold Room and will be studying “Teachings on Community” using Scripture texts from both the Old and New Testaments, including Jonah, Ruth, Colossians, and Philemon.. These are exciting and challenging lessons that call us to be serious about how to truly live in community as Christians. The Discussion class continues its study of the New Testament book of James, a very practical book of how we can put our faith into action. There is also a class for Young Adults led by Ralph Miller studying current topics of interest, and classes for children and Youth of all ages. Don’t miss this opportunity to grow in your faith by studying God’s Word.

When this Home was open for us I was just 29 and I was happy to come here because my family were old. I wish they make home for people have cerebral palsy place and I said good because my family was getting old and I didn’t like Mom and Father drive to see me over at Good Shepherd Home. I know Leah because her Mother and Father brought her to Good Shepherd Home to see me. We know each other when we were little girls. Meat Canning

The Meat Canning Project this year will again take place at the Christian Aid Ministries, 1412 Division Highway, Ephrata on April 5 – 8, and April 12 – 15, 2010. Donations will be accepted through April. For the last several years canning has been limited to one week. But due to the devastation in Haiti from the earthquake there, our District has challenged us to redouble our efforts and do two weeks worth of canning, with the entire volume of cans for the second week to be sent to Haiti. This would mean canning about 80,000 lbs of chicken at a cost approaching $90,000. This is one vital hands-on way we can all do something to ease some of the pain and hopelessness of the survivors there. Please donate generously and please consider working a shift at Christian Aid Ministries to do the actual canning of the meat. We have a group going on Tuesday, April 13^th. Will you be a part of that group? This is an experience you will never forget and is vital to the life-saving ministry of outreach to Haiti through our Disaster Relief program.

Small Groups

A number of small groups are currently meeting and extend a sincere welcome to you to join them. In addition to the ongoing Sunday school classes (quite likely the best way to join a small group) meeting every Sunday morning, there is a group studying the book of Romans every Tuesday night beginning at 7 PM; a Women’s Bible study every other Monday night (3/8, 3/22, 4/5); prayer group meeting on Friday nights (check bulletin for dates), and Women’s fellowship group. There are also a knitting group, skiing group, weight watchers group, men’s prayer breakfast group (3/20), and more in the making. Don’t miss these opportunities for growth and fellowship. Get Out Your Needles!

One of the new small groups being offered is the knitters group.  This can be a “learn to knit” occasion, or if you are already a knitter or crocheter, a time to meet together to share patterns, yarn and ideas or just to get away from distractions to knit uninterrupted.  There are many charitable knitting projects.  Guideposts magazine has a children’s sweater pattern and distribution system to send them around the world.  There is a pattern from Church World Service for a baby sweater for the kits like those the Discussion Sunday School class put together.   We have already sent some hand-crafted baby blankets with the first set of kits that was sent to New Windsor Service Center for Haiti.  There are many patterns for prayer shawls and lap robes to be knitted for the sick or nursing home residents.   We will be meeting on Monday nights on the opposite weeks of the women’s Bible study.  Contact Sue Sparrow or Becky Rishel.

With the power of a 1 – 2 punch, the snow put a hurting on the Oyster Supper for this year. After much deliberation and consultation, it has been decided that we will cancel the traditional oyster supper for this winter.  With so many other activities going on, scheduling being what it is and parking at a premium for quite some time, all things considered, it was felt that the best decision was to cancel it completely. So there will be no oyster supper for this year.

I’m convinced that many of us in small churches today wear ourselves out trying to do too much that really cannot be considered as ministry. While it is an absolute necessity that we maintain our buildings and care for our facilities, equipment and the like, in my opinion, we expend huge amounts of energy treading water. Too many people, taking their faith very seriously, are wearing themselves out trying to do too much while a number of folks who are less committed seem not to care about matters of faith. The end result is that the faithful are burning themselves out by simply doing too much and ignoring the counsel of Psalm 46 – that is to “be still and know” God and find our energy and purpose in God.

One novel suggestion that perhaps we all need to take seriously is this: I think every believer – every one of who claim the name of Jesus – should be doing three things every week. I think that every one of us should attend Worship, be a part of an active small group, and serve in some area of ministry, on a weekly basis.

Worship is where we reenergize and grow in our relationship with God as we sing and pray and praise Him. Small groups allow us to grow in our understanding of God and His Word and in relationship with each other. And service is vital to a growing faith because it allows us to focus on others rather than ourselves.

I believe we could simplify our lives and grow much more stable in our faith if we’d adopt a sincere commitment to do just these three things every week. Our mission statement reads very much like this: Love God; love each other; serve the world.

The Souper Bowl!!Continue to bring your cans of soup and one dollar bills for the Souper Bowl Drive on Sunday, February 7^th. The JR HI class is sponsoring this outreach and we will be collecting soup all during the month of February. The soup will be used for our own ‘food bank’ and the money will be used to buy Giant Gift cards for distribution to the needy. Did I hear a goal of 250 cans?!?! Wow!

Sunday School Electives

The Adult classes are entering the last month of this quarter, but it’s not too late to join some exciting and challenging discussion and learning. In addition to the International Lesson Quarterly studying ‘Christ, the Fulfillment,’ there is the Discussion Class studying the New Testament book of James, a practical guidebook for everyday Christian living. There is also a special class for Young Adults called “Let’s Talk” and classes for Youth and children of all ages.

Leadership Team Report

The MACOB Church Board met Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Following are major items discussed during that meeting:

• Jolynn Lentz will be the conference delegate, replacing Bonita Grady

• A keyboard (Yahama P140)to replace Bonita Grady’s has been selected at the price of approximately $900.

• The Ministry Committee will recommend the hiring of Evan Brickner as accompanist.

• Monies to support previous evangelism and outreach efforts were allocated.

• A committee is working to draft a tentative agreement to share our facility with Restoration Ministries.

• Approval was granted for a pension change as requested.

• Purchase of Church internet access is being pursued.

• The Youth are working to raise needed funds for attending NYC.

MACOB January Council Meeting

The MACOB Church Council met Sunday, January 17, 2010. Following are major items discussed during that meeting:

• Committee chairpersons shared their end-of-the year reports. Some highlights include Pastor Godfrey’s sabbatical, Bonita Grady’s resignation and installation of a new furnace.

• Approval to present a tentative one-year agreement to Restoration Ministries for sharing of the physical facility was granted.

• MACOB has hired Evan Brickner as an accompanist in a 3-month trial position.

• A revised congregation directory is forthcoming.

• Next year is MACOB’s 75^th anniversary; Becky Rishel is looking for suggestions for celebrating this milestone in the church’s history.

• To aid the devastation in Haiti, $30,000 from the Endowment Fund was designated for outreach and ministry.

Oyster Dinner

The Executive Committee of the Board has been planning a schedule for 2009. The first event is the annual Oyster Supper, scheduled for Saturday evening, February 21^st, 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM. The menu includes: fried oysters and oyster stew, fish, hot dogs, slaw, apple sauce, pickles, etc. and dessert and beverage. (Donations of desserts would be appreciated). Cost will be by donation (free will offering).  Snow date: 2/28/09.

Meat Canning outreach

Meat canning is coming up in April this year. The District has a goal of canning about 40,000 pounds of chicken this year. Our special offering during February will be for the meat-canning project. Co-sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic and SoPA Districts, we are seeking volunteers to help in the processing effort. Work groups are planned for just four days this year; April 5^th thru 8^th , with two scheduled work periods each day – from 6 AM to noon and from 9 AM to 2:30 PM. Processing takes place at Christian Aid Ministries near Ephrata. The canned chicken is used to assist those in need locally as well as internationally. This is an opportunity for you to enjoy the fellowship of working with others from various COB congregations – while responding to God’s call to help those less fortunate. From the Pastor’s Desk

Dr. John DeBrine hosts a daily radio show on WDAC (Lancaster) known as Songtime USA. In a recent broadcast, he made the following statement: “I was reading that in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, it takes two people an average of one month to lead someone to Christ. In America it takes about 95 people a whole year to lead someone to Christ and the thing that worries me is we are beginning to enter into an age in the life of the church here in America where the majority of people in the congregation have never led anyone to Christ.”

That’s a bit of a startling statement for us to ponder. For Brethren, who supposedly take the Great Commission seriously, it causes us to see declining membership in a different light.

Many of us – perhaps even most of us – feel uncomfortable with evangelizing, with being intentional about trying to lead a new person to belief in Jesus. But the Bible clearly gives each one of us the challenge to do exactly that. It’s a challenge few of us desire to take up.

What if, at the start of this new year, you would just try to develop one new friendship with a person outside the faith; perhaps a neighbor, coworker, friend, family member? Why not invite him/her to Worship or Sunday school or your favorite Bible study or some other Church activity?

When you are really excited about something, that excitement can clearly be seen by others around you. They tend to get excited about the same thing as your enthusiasm draws them in. So how excited are we about our faith? If you feel uncomfortable with leading someone to Jesus, can you at least lead that person to Church and give the pastor or some other person an opportunity to share Jesus with them?

If each one of us this year brought just one new person to faith, can you do the math on what that would do for our declining membership? I remember a line from school back about 150 years ago. It was “Each one teach one.” Some of you may remember it as well. What if each one of us would take the challenge to invite one – to Worship, to Sunday school, to Bible study, to Prayer group?

It’s been just over six months that we have gone with a slimmer organization pattern of the Leadership Team replacing the Church Board setup we’d used for many years. Much has been done as we find our way, sometimes by trial and error, through this new streamlined configuration.  As a result of the Fall Council meeting last November the Leadership Team for 2010 will consist of the following persons:

Leadership Team meeting December 8, 2009

The most recent meeting of the Leadership Team took place on 12/08/09. Items of discussion were as follows: treasurer’s reports, update on minor problems with the new heating plant, the need for two rooms for children (nursery) during Worship because of the number of children in Worship recently, preparation for the Christmas party, yet another service group wanting to use our facility for meetings, more new small group possibilities, new directory for 2010, purchase of a new keyboard, internet access for the Church, payment from the Endowment Fund to supplement the Youth Director salary, Church planting, and another church using our facility. There is obviously much going on within the ministries of MACOB. As the Leadership Team works on them, we seek your prayerful support. Minutes from all meetings are always available on the info table, and your prayers and questions and input are always welcomed.

Our Commitment to Outreach

The spiritual health of any congregation can readily be seen in the extent of the outreach they support. A big ‘Thank you’ for such great response throughout the last year’s special outreach missions, special offerings for many and varied ministries, and the many times you as a congregation gave over and above your regular offerings in response to a specific need. These are tough economic times as we all know. But our regular giving has not kept up with our spending for ongoing expenses here at MACOB.  The 2010 budget adopted at last Fall’s Council meeting is certainly a challenge for us as a congregation. Do we really have enough faith to believe that God will provide that much through our own commitment to giving?

The economic struggle exists for all the outreach missions we support. A decision was made to make some of our commitment to outreach in 2010 through the Endowment Fund. While that may offset some of the strain on our budget, it does not allow for our responsibility as committed followers of Christ to be a giving people, giving even sacrificially to those in need. As we enter this new year, may we all be challenged to prayerfully examine our faith, especially in the areas of discipline in Bible, prayer, study, and the stewardship of the many resources God has put at our disposal.

Let us show our spiritual health, as individuals and as a congregation, by our sincere effort to increase our giving, in the confident assurance of God’s Word that we can: “test me on this,” says the Lord God Almighty, “and see if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have enough room for it.”  That’s a promise form God that if we do our part, He will bless us beyond measure. Do we really believe that?

Terrorist Groups identified within local congregations!
In a recent issue of the Greencastle Newsletter, Pastor Yoder shared that there are terrorist groups operating in our churches.  He noted that the last reports indicate there are five terrorist cell groups operating in many local churches. They have been identified as:
Bin Sleepin…Bin Arguin…Bin Fightin…Bin Complainin & Bin Missin
Investigative officers have identified their leader as Osama Bin Lucifer.
It seems that the only known effective counter to this terrorism force is via a cell group named Bin Prayin. The Bin Prayin group does not blend in with whoever and whatever comes along. It does whatever is needed to uplift and encourage the Body of Christ. Pastor Yoder noted that he has noticed that the Bin Prayin cell group has different characteristics than the others. They have Bin Watchin… Bin Waitin…Bin Fastin… and Bin Longin for their Master, Jesus Christ, to return.
In self examination, do you fit into the above Terrorist groups? When you awakened this morning, what did you pray for? Might I suggest that in addition to thanking our great God for a night of rest and a new day, we ask God to help keep us from being a part of one of these terrorist groups.

It’s that Time of the Year

Yes, it’s bound to happen. Sometimes the snow and/or other hazardous weather conditions may force us to cancel Worship services or other activities. If there is any doubt, please call the Church office (after 8 AM ) – the message on the recorder will inform of any closings or cancellations – and listen to WSBA – AM 910 or WDAC – FM 94.5 on your radio.

             

Calling all Men

Don’t forget our monthly breakfast for all the men of the Church. We meet at 7:30 AM on the third Saturday of each month for a hearty breakfast, good fellowship, and a brief time of meditation and prayer. Be sure to join us, and bring a friend, if you like. We usually finish by 8:30 – 9 AM.

Annual Church Council meeting – January 17th

            It’s quite normal at this time to issue an appeal to everyone to attend the Church Council meeting to keep up with everything that’s going on and to have your personal input into those happenings.  This has been a transition year with many happenings and we are still working to smooth out some of the rough edges.  So be sure to mark your calendar for the annual year-end Church Council meeting scheduled for 1 PM on Sunday, January 17^th. A light Soup & Sandwich lunch will be provided for all at 12:00 noon (after Worship) prior to the Council meeting to facilitate your attendance. Year-end reports of committees and Leadership Team members, financial statements, goals, discussion on Worship, schedules, and staff, and much more – including a decision concerning another Church congregation using our facility – will be on the agenda. Be sure to be there.

 

  Nurture Team News

             Brenda Laughman has accepted the call to be the Nurture Team chair person for 2010. She will oversee the programs of Sunday school, Bible school, nursery, Junior Church, and the total Christian education ministry of MACOB. That is a huge calling and it’s impossible for one person to do it all. We are counting on the willing participation of many volunteers as this year and its educational opportunities progress. It takes a whole Church to fulfill our mission of nurturing disciples for Jesus and we need each one of you to be a part of that mission. We are grateful for our willing core of teachers, volunteers and helpers, and welcome new persons feeling the calling to be a part of the educational process here at MACOB.

            Sue Sparrow continues in her position as the Ministry Team chairperson for 2010. Please share your comments, concerns, and ideas concerning our staff and Worship services, etc. with her at any time.  We ask for your prayers as we continue to develop our ministry together here at MACOB. This is a huge “job” in itself and is only possible as each one of us within the body of Christ here at MACOB willingly assume our responsibility to be an active, growing member of that body. If you have an idea for Worship, music, or special services….or if you want to volunteer to lead Worship, plan a Worship service, share a message…. or if you have a suggestion for a special speaker, skit, new song or anthem, or anything for the building up of our Worship and life together, please share your thoughts with Sue. And consider your own calling when asked to be a part of the Worship service at any time.

The Book of Romans Bible Study  

Please join us as a new Bible Study is planned to start on Tuesday, January 19^th at 7:00 pm.  The group will be led by Carol and Don Kauffman and tentatively will meet in the Reynold room.  The book of Romans will provide for discussion of a number of basic Christian doctrines including faith, spiritual gifts and respect for government.  If you are interested in joining this new group, please use the sign-up sheets at either entrance to the church sanctuary or contact the Kauffman’s at 292-7947 or Ralph and Gloria Miller at 767-6627.

Knitting

Have you ever thought about learning to knit and using you knitting skills as an outreach to others?  Sue Sparrow and Becky Rishel have volunteered to lead such a knitting group.  Starting on January 18^th at 7:00 pm in the Reynold room, Sue and Becky are offering to help you learn how to knit.  Then, for those who already know how to knit, as well as those who have just learned, projects will be designed for various knit items as an outreach.  To sign-up either as a person who is interested in learning knit or as an individual who knows how to knit and would participate in the outreach, please use the sign-up sheets at either entrance to the church sanctuary.   You may also contact the Sue at 308-0356, Becky at 428-3732, or Ralph/Gloria Miller at 767-6627.

Let’s Ski   

We were blessed (?) with snow in December and now some individuals have the urge to hit the slopes.  If you are one of those people who is interested in skiing, then you might consider joining Don Kauffman, Brenda Linebaugh, and Dave Wolfe on Saturdays for fun at Ski Roundtop.   Since this activity is dependent on the weather, plans are made on a week-by-week basis.  So let Don, Brenda, or Dave know you would be interested in joining them.

Looking for less of you in 2010 

No, we don’t mean that we want to see you less often in church.  We mean some of us have been in the cookie jar way too often and a new year / new decade would be a good time to make the decision to lose some weight.  So at this point, we are asking for interest in the church members having someone guide us in a program to lose weight.  If you are interested, please sign up on one of the sheets at either entrance to the church sanctuary.   You may also contact Ralph/Gloria Miller at 767-6627.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Ever watched a water bug? You know, those little bugs that skate across the top of the water? They are truly amazing. They have long legs that splay out, supporting the weight of the insect’s long skinny body. The bugs never get wet; they simply skate back and forth, constantly searching for whatever it is that they’re looking for! Water bugs don’t live in the water; they live on it. Their world is the shimmering, glassy surface. Beneath them are the depths – of which they likely have absolutely no awareness.

            In the helter-skelter of our lives we are much like water bugs. We race to and fro, busy with one thing, then another – oblivious much of the time to the deeper dimensions of life around us. We spend so much of our time gliding along the surface. Seldom do we plumb the depths.

            The vacation times of summer are basically behind us, and we look forward to another busy fall season of Worship and study. We want to make every opportunity available to everyone for plumbing those depths of life, love and a growing relationship with God as we move into this season. As the body of Christ in this place, we want to grow in our love for God, our love for each other, and live that love out by serving others.

            One of the best ways we can do that is to be a part of a study group, exploring the comfort and assurance of Biblical wisdom, prayer, and fellowship. Many small groups are currently in place and more are being added even as you read this newsletter. There is no better way to grow in all those relationships – with God, with each other, and with those outside our fellowship – than to invite others to be a part of a small group with you. Please check out the many offerings we have available for study and prayer and join a small group. It may – no, it quite likely will – change your perspective on what is truly important in this life.

            The following seven core values are essential for us as a vibrant congregation:

Servant Leadership – having groups and programs and leaders in place to meet the needs of people needing and/or seeking a relationship with God.

Reproduce Yourself – the need for intentional mentoring, teaching, training of younger folks into leadership

Doing life together – the vitality of small groups for spiritual formation and growth (personal and Church)

Bridges and lights – the need for us to be culturally relevant in our ministries to attract and keep young folks

Maximum freedom – realizing that true freedom is found only when we submit to the authority of the Bible

True intimacy – to have a relationship with God means more than just believing in him; we have to truly get to know him and spend time with him

Relational evangelism – the best way to attract people to Church is through personal relationship with them

             When we begin to apply these seven Biblical principles to all that we do here as a body of Christ, we will indeed be a vibrant, relevant, growing Church. The best place for each one of us to start is to be a part of an ongoing small group, studying God’s Word with brothers and sisters. How many groups are you a part of?

District Conference   

The weekend of September 18 & 19 (Friday & Saturday) will see District Conference convene at the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, beginning with registration from 8:30 to 9:30 AM Friday morning. The theme of this year’s Conference is “Woe is me for I am undone…,” taken from Isaiah 6:1 – 8. In Isaiah’s day many of the people of Israel had fallen away from loyalty and worshipping God. God gave Isaiah a vision of God’s holiness and Isaiah, in response to being in the presence of Holy God, uttered those familiar words. What would it be like for us to gain a vision of the holiness of God – in totality, in person? What might our response be? Interestingly enough, in Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase of the Bible we know as the Message, this phrase is translated as “It’s Doomsday! I’m as good as dead!” Hmmm. I wonder how we might react if we were in Isaiah’s place.

            Registration begins at 8:30 Friday morning and the business sessions begin at 9:30 AM and conclude at 5:30 PM. Opportunity to attend one of six interesting insight sessions is a part of the Friday afternoon activities (and again Saturday morning).  The evening Worship service begins at 7 PM with a special musical introduction, with Worship beginning at 7:20; Tom Zuercher, former District Executive and current Pastor from northern Ohio, will be the Worship speaker. The licensing of ministers – a part of each District Conference – will be a part of the evening Worship time. And….there will be a pie and ice cream social after Worship! Is that Brethren or what?

The Conference continues Saturday morning with registration beginning at 8:00, and the opening business sessions will begin at 9:00. Elections, more insight sessions, and reports of the different mission works of our District will fill the day with information and numerous worship times.  The meeting is scheduled to close about 3:00 PM. Everyone is encouraged to attend and be a part of the opportunities for Worship, information, and Spiritual formation. Conference is an excellent time to actually hear and see the various and vital ministries that your District monies support. See brochures on the table in the Fellowship Hall (or check with the Pastor) for more information on registration and time schedule, etc.

The question is often asked, Where does the money we give to “the District” go, and what is it used for? Attending District Conference is an excellent way to get that question answered. When you see all of the vital, life-changing ministries you are a part of because of your financial support of District work, you will gain a new understanding of the vital nature of our fair-share support of District ministries. Come and worship; be enlightened and challenged anew.

PS – This weekend happens to coincide with a Penn State home football game, so lodging is at a premium for Friday night. You are encouraged to sign up to stay overnight with members of the Bunkertown Church. It’s a great way to make and meet new friends and learn about other congregations. Information is available from the Pastor or on the information table. Please register early for this exciting event. 

 

Choir Rehearsals to Resume on Thursday, 9/10/09

            Our summer break has gone by quickly and it’s time to return to our regular weekly schedule for rehearsals. We are looking forward to another great season of singing and fellowship. If you have a talent and/or desire to sing, we encourage you to join us and share your talents. We’ve lots of new songs to learn and share in Worship. Everyone is welcome, and we are especially looking for some new voices and a great time of sharing God’s gift of music in Worship. The Bell Choir will practice at 6:00 PM each Thursday, and the Adult Choir will practice at 7:00 PM.  New bell ringers are also encouraged to join us and try out that unique style of music.

          PS: The Praise Team continues to practice at 8 PM on Thursdays. Newcomers welcome here, too.

Leadership Team Report

The new Leadership Team met on 7/28/09. Ministry Team filled us in on our new Youth Director, Tim Rutkowski, who will be starting officially in September and will be meeting with our Youth on several occasions prior to that time. Questions were raised regarding special offerings, our Child Protection policy, and the Annual Conference report on August 9^th.

            Properties Team reported on progress and future prevention of the ceiling stains in the Sanctuary and the imminent installation of the new heating system. Nurture Team expressed concerns for a baby room for infants and nursing mothers, a follow-up with our VBS program and attendees, and persons for future leadership. The Small-group Team reported good attendance for our in-house small group workshop, a national workshop in October, and ongoing small groups Bible studies currently in progress. A concerted push for small group participation will take place soon with multiple options for study.

            Information on the upcoming Church picnic was discussed, as was a 75^th anniversary celebration for next year, Deacon visitation (in addition to Pastoral visitation), a Disaster Relief trip for September of 2010, and a sermon presentation and content, especially in relation to attendance.

            A Gifts Discernment survey will be distributed soon to help that team in their work for 2010. General discussion followed regarding the nature and mechanics of the new Leadership Team working together to be sure the “work” of the Church is accomplished and things do not ‘fall through the cracks.’ Concern was raised for the practice of not providing snacks following Worship during the summer months. A working document was distributed to help begin the process of preparing a budget for 2010, which was followed by discussion on the reality or fallacy of what our budget actually reflects. This will be a major item of business for the next meeting, which was set for 9/08/09.

 

Nurture Team News

            The new Fall quarter of Sunday School lessons starts September 6^th. The International Lessons class will be studying a series of lessons titled The New Testament Community, focusing on the core values of the Christian community, the work and ministry of the community, and the struggles (which probably haven’t changed much) the early Church experienced in being the Community of faith. The Discussion class continues its examination and discussion of the popular Christian fiction book The Shack. There is a class for elementary students.  The Junior High and Youth classes are combining for the fall quarter, and the Young Adult class continues to meet in the Library under the leadership of Ralph Miller.

            There are also numerous Bible study options available for everyone: There are groups for women, day time groups, evening groups, some that concentrate more on prayer, and all study different Biblical topics and books. New ideas are always welcomed for a new study or fellowship group, so please speak to Ralph Miller – Small Groups Leader  – if you have a desire to form a new small group.

Eco-Corner

Are you using bottled water for its convenience?  If so, you may want to reconsider this practice. Consider the following information regarding their use:

1.    Statistics vary, but the “bottom line” is that bottled water is much more expensive than your everyday tap water and…

2.   Often, the bottled water is just tap water nicely packaged!

3.   The packaging of bottled water uses valuable resources that could be saved. In addition, transportation costs, the cost of disposal and more add up to make it a poor choice.

4.   Re-using a plastic bottle is dangerous because it leaches chemicals!

 

 So… what should you do to be a better steward of the environment?

Purchase a re-usable container that is BPA free and use your tap water.

A simple solution to a huge environmental problem!

From the Pastor’s Desk
I seldom read the comics section of the Sunday paper though there was a time when it was one of my favorite parts. I still like the old “Peanuts” cartoons, though there are only reruns now that Mr. Shultz is gone. I do remember one very old “Dennis the Menace” cartoon in which Dennis was kneeling beside his bed beginning his bedtime prayer. This is how he started: “God, you might want to pull up a chair. I’ve been very busy today.”
I’m not real sure, but I suspect that more than a few of us have had days like that. Well, at least I have! Sometimes I wonder at the extent to which I must certainly try my maker’s patience and His willingness to forgive. More than one day, I confess, I have to agree with Paul’s summation of his daily activities where said in Romans: “For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the veil I do not want to do; this I keep on doing. ……what a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?”
    On those low days, I am buoyed by the words Paul writes soon thereafter, when He thanks God for that rescue through the work of Jesus. Then I too, can also say: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…”
So then the question becomes – what does it mean to be in Christ Jesus? That whole chapter (Romans is a personal uplifting passage for me as I struggle daily to follow the guidelines and teachings of the Bible. Knowing the Word is not quite enough, though it is an absolute necessary start. I must live it out daily in all I do. That’s the problem for me: this life is so ‘daily.’
I pray your summer is going well. As we gear up for the fall here at MACOB, I want to encourage you in as strong a way as possible to consider joining at least one small group study group. Those of you who have been active in small groups over the years know what a valuable, learning, growing, relationship-building experience it can be. My encouragement to you is to invite others into whatever group you are going to be a part of this year. People you may not know well, people who are not members of this congregation, people who need to hear the message of the gospel – perhaps even for the first time.
And for those of you who’ve never been a part of a small study group, I really want to encourage you to join a group. You will never know how rewarding it can be in terms of learning and growing and getting a new handle on God’s Word until you try.
The success of the future ministry here at MACOB may well hinge of the very invitation you give to someone (perhaps yourself!) to join a small group. Church growth only happens through personal invitations from those within the family of faith to those who need an avenue of relationship to learn about Jesus. You may be that avenue.
Ralph Miller is our Small Groups Leader on our Leadership Team. If you have suggestions for study topics and/or subjects for a small group, please let him know. Currently, we are working on topics to be offered and getting leaders lined up for leading those groups beginning likely near the end of September or the beginning of October. Please consider which group you will want to be a part of. More information and a listing of groups and times will be available soon.

Church Picnic
August  9…sounds like a great date for a picnic.  Please join us after church service on Sunday, August 9th  for an all-church picnic.  There will be splashing & dashing and diving & sliding, some walking and stopping, good food and fellowship to savor -  so please feel free to dress casually (picnic attire would be perfectly acceptable).
Our Church service that morning will be centered on this year’s Annual Conference.  Following the morning service, plan to stay and enjoy the beautiful August weather as we celebrate God’s creation.
We will provide hot dogs, BBQ, chips, ice cream and drinks.  Bring cakes for the cake walk, chairs to park your bottom on, a relaxed attitude and we promise to put a smile on your face.  We’ll have a dunk tank, a slippy slide and various games for the young or young at heart.  We look forward to seeing you and having a wonderful time fellowshipping on the church lawn.

Gifts Discernment Team
Because of our new leadership team configuration, the work formerly done by the Nominating Committee is now being addressed by the Gifts Discernment Team. They are in the process of beginning their work of prayerfully seeking members willing to serve on our Leadership Team and in other capacities of leadership within the Church. We ask two things of each of you: first, that you be in prayer for us as we seek to discern who God may be preparing and calling into positions of leadership, and second, that if you are asked to consider being called to one of needed positions, that you carefully – and prayerfully – consider that God may be calling you to serve in some new or different or special way. We believe that God has given each one of us a special Spiritual gift(s) to be used for the work of His kingdom here on earth. Please consider that God may be calling you to use your gift in a new and vital way for the health and growth of this congregation.
Is God calling you? He may be – through the prayerful discerning process of the Gifts Discernment Team.

Sunday School News
Join us for the summer series of Sunday School studies. The International Lesson Class is using the lesson book Call Sealed with Promise as a basis for discussion and learning. The series of lessons is based on Scripture from the first five books of the Old Testament. We will study how God’s call came to different people at different times as well as God’s faithfulness in those calls. Join us for some challenging and exciting times of fellowship, study, and learning.
The Discussion Class will continue its discussion of the popular Christian fiction book The Shack, a book that explores the challenging topic of forgiveness. Though it is a fiction book, several great lessons can be gained from this study.
The Young Adult Class continues to meet in the Library under the leadership of Ralph Miller with their own chosen study topics. There are also classes for Youth, Jr Hi, and children.

Annual Conference Report
In an effort to more fully inform you of Annual Conference work and activities, our Conference reporting will be very different this year. Our entire Worship service on Sunday, August 9th will center on
the workings of Annual Conference in San Diego. With video clips of sermons, highlights of the various Conference activities, music and much more, you won’t want to miss this exciting time of Worship and reporting. The all-church picnic will follow; plan to attend!
To Think About……
Rivers gain a lot more attention than the little tributaries that create them. You can name some of the great rivers of the world, but you probably cannot name any of their tributaries. However, without the tributaries, there would be no river. And remember also, that the smaller streams, while less well-known, are always found on a higher elevation.
Some of our lives are like those tributary streams. We may never be well-known for anything we do. But it is our role to provide the ‘pure water’ from the higher elevation that enables another to be a mighty river of influence. Who are you mentoring in the faith?

Dunkard Valley Live
If you are into Contemporary Christian music in concert, check out the fifth annual Dunkard Valley Live concert at the Codorus COB ball field on Sat and/or Sunday August 1& 2, 2009. A large number of local persons, praise teams, groups, and choirs will be performing their own style of Christian music, live on stage. Worship services with dynamic speakers will be interspersed throughout the event. There will be plenty of parking, food, and fellowship on site, as well as a great variety of music and worship. Once again, Madison Avenue is doing its part to support the 33rd Disaster Relief Auction on September 25th & 26 on the Lebanon Fairgrounds. We are starting our collection to send a heifer named Penny to the auction. This annual auction supports many of the initiatives established by the Church of the Brethren, and many types of help are needed. Consider some of the possible ways in which you (or a group) can do so: donate a theme basket, baked goods, a quilt, or time.   See Treva Gingerich  for more information

Are our expectations and understandings influenced by our familiarity with the Bible or by our desires of how we want God to be and to act? If God doesn’t do what we expect or want, do we just stop believing or trying to get to know him? Have we formed or own opinion of who God is and what we believe by studying the Bible or just by our own wishes and what we want him to be?
Recently in Dallas, a “Husband Shopping Center” opened, where women could go to choose a husband from among many men. It was laid out with five floors, with the men increasing in positive attributes as one ascends the floors. The only rules: Once you opened the door to any floor, you must choose a man from that floor, and if you went up a floor, you couldn’t go back down except to leave the place, never to return.
A couple of girlfriends went to the place to find men. On the first floor, the door had a sign that read: “These men have jobs and love children.” The women read the sign and said, “Well that’s better than not having jobs and not loving kids, but I wonder what’s farther up.” So they went up.
The sign on the second floor read: “These men have high-paying jobs, love children, and are extremely good looking.” The girls were tempted, but decided to go higher.
Third floor: “These men have high-paying jobs, love children, are extremely good looking and help with the housework.” Almost as one the women said, “Wow! That’s really tempting, but I wonder what’s up higher.” And up they went to the fourth floor.
Here the sign said: “These men have high-paying jobs, love children, are extremely good looking, help with the housework and have a strong romantic streak.”  Again the women were tempted to open the door and rush in, but held off saying, “Oh. Mercy! Can you even imagine what’s waiting on the next floor? So up they went.
Arriving at the fifth floor, they saw the sign that read: “This floor is empty and exists only to prove that women are impossible to please.”
Okay, you can turn the gender issue the other way just as easily, I’ll admit. But the point is this: Do we apply that very same principle to our expectations of God? Can we accept God as the Bible tells us, or will we insist on making Him in our image? Do we know the God of the Bible or are we just making up some god to suit our own personal likes and dislikes? And then, when things don’t go as
we want, we blame God and wonder why he didn’t do what we wanted. Who is God, really?

Sunday School News
Join us for the summer series of Sunday School studies. The International Lesson Class is using the lesson book Call Sealed with Promise as a basis for discussion and learning. The series of lessons is based on Scripture from the first five books of the Old Testament. We will study how God’s call came to different people at different times and God’s faithfulness in those calls. Join us for some challenging and exciting times of fellowship, study and learning.

The Discussion Class will continue its discussion of the popular Christian fiction book The Shack, a book that explores the challenging topic of forgiveness. Though it is a fiction book, there are several great lessons to gain from this study
The Young Adult Class members continue to meet in the Library under the leadership of Ralph Miller with their own chosen study topics. There are also classes for Youth, Jr Hi, and children.

Annual Conference    6/26 – 6/30
Annual Conference is in San Diego, CA this year, from Saturday, 6/26 thru Wednesday, 6/30. With a theme of  “The old has gone; the new has come; all this is from God,” Moderator David Shumate will lead conference attendees through the five days of activity that serves as much as a family reunion as a working session.  Five major important business items (some of the most impacting and controversial business in years!), innumerable insight sessions, powerful Worship services, great Bible study options, great music and group singing, and much more await those who choose to be better informed and challenged in their faith walk. The Pastors can obtain more information if you are planning to attend. Please remember the Conference and all the delegates and attendees in your prayers, as the decisions made there have a lasting effect in our denomination’s ministries and our witness to the world. Our delegate this year is Sue Grady.

Leadership Team report   (6/3/09)
The new Leadership Team met on June 3rd. Among the major items discussed were a financial package to be offered to a prospect for a Youth Ministry Director, proposal for a new furnace, and preparations for our upcoming VBS. Also discussed were financial reports, repairs, Deacon work, Church picnic, and preparations for a 75th anniversary celebration next year.
More details can be obtained by checking the minutes of that meeting, which are always available on the info table in the Fellowship Hall near the mailboxes. Keep up to date on all that’s happening at MACOB by reading a copy of those minutes.

WE ROCKED CROCODILE DOCK!
•Vacation Bible School had the church hopping the third week in June.  Fifteen children, four teen helpers and 24 volunteers learned about Moses and the escape of the Israelites from Egypt as well as the death
and resurrection of Jesus. Lively music, dramatic stories, multiple clever crafts, comfort critters to be sent to disaster relief areas, yummy snacks and exciting games all reinforced the topics for the evening. The adventures of Chadder Chipmunk in the Hokey Bad Jokey Swamp also helped teach us to “Fear Not” because God is With Us, God is Powerful, God Does What He Says He’ll Do, God Gives Us Life and God
Cares for Us.
•New this year was an adult class that had two participants from the neighborhood.  It is hoped this will expand in the future.
• Special thanks to Meg Rishel for the gorgeous backdrop and others who helped create the decorations.
• It is an amazing gift from God that so many members of our congregation are moved to help make Vacation Bible School happen.  Thanks to each one who gave their time and talents to make this outreach
to children in the
neighborhood.

We have assembled nearly 300 Health Kits at this time. Our plan is to deliver them to New Windsor Service Center on July 14th, leaving the church at 9:30 AM. Part of our day is a visit to the International Gift Shop and lunch at Baugher’s Restaurant. Thank you for the gifts toward this project, especially Jim Bohn.  Thanks also for the sugar cookie sale support.

The Eco-Corner
One of our callings in today’s world (as in all times) is to be careful and conscientious stewards of the earth’s resources that have been placed into our hands. Especially in America’s fast-paced and abundant society, becoming swept up in careless and wasteful habits is very easy, contributing to pollution and waste. Following are five very easy habits that you can make a part of your everyday routine and do your part in saving the world’s resources as well as creating a more eco-friendly environment.
1.    Unplug appliances not in use. Did you know that appliances continue to draw electricity even if not in use? Save energy and money by unplugging!
2.     Use a cloth bag when going to the grocery store – or any other store for that matter. Plastic bags use a huge amount of resources to produce . They also pollute – killing many animals that consider them food. Did you know that an island floats in the Pacific – made of littered plastic?
3.    Decrease the amount of commercial cleaning products you use. Commercial cleaning products are full of chemicals and use resources for manufacturing. The old alternatives of household baking soda, vinegar, scouring pads and a little elbow grease do just as well.
4.    Leave grass clippings on the lawn. The decompose and add nutrients back into the soil.
5.    Avoid commercial herbicides. Try using vinegar in a spray bottle as a weed killer. Spray milk on plants to ward away deer & cayenne to ward away rabbits.
Remember that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something to help the environment.

Our congregation meeting in Council last Sunday (6/21) approved the purchase and installation of a new furnace/heating plant for our facility as well as the addition of a 1/3 time Youth Director to our staff here at MACOB.     One of the areas we want to really expand is our small groups ministry. Understanding the vital nature of studying and learning and leading in a small group setting is foundational to the success of ministry. With renewed emphasis on training and developing leaders, we will begin promoting greater participation in small groups in the near future. We will use this summer as a time of training and preparation for a major thrust in the fall. Please be in prayer for our Leadership Team as we work diligently on this important venture. And consider how you can help by active involvement in the small group environment.
By this time you’ve undoubtedly noticed our new mission/vision statement in the bulletin each week: “Love God, love each other, serve the world.” We have always been an open, inviting, welcoming congregation, but we have not done quite so well in growing disciples: in intentionally having opportunities for new people to plug into classes and activities that are specifically designed to help people move forward in their relationship with God. It is our prayer as we enter this new phase of ministry process that we can do a better job of helping others grow along with us in their faith walk.
This would be a great time to invite unchurched friends, neighbors, relatives…to worship with us. We are going to try to help people learn to love God – through vibrant, alive Worship, to love each other – with specifically designed small groups of all kinds, so we can become disciples that are willing to serve the world around us in some form of ministry. Every one of us, if we have a vibrant, growing faith and relationship with God, should be doing three things every week. Those three things are as follows: to spend regular time in worship, attend and participate in a small group study, and be active in some kind of ministry.
We are one body made up of many parts. There are no unimportant parts. Every one of us is vital to the success of this body. Teaching, administration, leadership, and worship are the obvious visible tasks. But we need ministers in choir, driving the bus, ushering, kitchen work, small group, nursery, mentoring, VBS, music, repair  -  the list is endless. There is a ministry for everyone, and if you’re not actively doing something, you’re cheating yourself and inhibiting the success of the entire body.
The Leadership Team seeks your prayerful support as we embark on this exciting new venture of faith. How will you be a part of the adventure?

Special Church Council
Following Worship on Sunday morning, March 29th, the full Church Council met again in the last step to formally adopt our new style of administration. The Council unanimously approved the new Leadership Team model of government and approved the following persons to lead us in this new chapter of ministry here at MACOB:

As we move into this new streamlined make-up of leadership, we are certain there will be some adjustments to make along the way. We encourage your questions as we seek your support and involvement in the total ministry here at MACOB. This is a very opportune time for every one of us to become more actively involved in some form of ministry. The Leadership Team looks forward to your support and active participation.

Nurture Team
Many opportunities exist for your continued spiritual challenge and growth. As the Sunday school classes enter the third month of the Spring quarter, the International Lessons Class continues its study of New Creation in Christ, looking at passages in Ephesians in relation to our lives today. The Discussion Class continues its study of The Shack, a Christian fiction book exploring the difficult topic of forgiveness. Classes for children and Youth as well as a class for Young Adults led by Ralph Miller are offered. Pastor Godfrey is currently leading a class for beginners, new believers, or persons just interested in exploring faith and Church membership. There truly is something for everyone, a class in which to explore and grow in our faith. There are also small group studies currently meeting, including a prayer group, a women’s Bible study, and a men’s group. If there is a desire for more at the present time, please see Ralph Miller, our small groups leadership chairperson.

Ministry Team
At our most recent Commission meeting discussion centered on the wisdom, necessity, and timing of the addition of a Youth Pastor to the staff here at MACOB. Possibilities for funding, working with another congregation and their Youth director, and other details were examined and discussed.
Arrangements have been made for filling the pulpit during the Pastors’ times of vacation and travel (Annual Conference, Camp Eder, Seminars, etc.) as well as covering for pastoral needs whenever one of them is away. We are blessed to have such depth of leadership and staff to handle such needs in the absence of a Pastor.
We continue to seek your input/ comments/suggestions/ critiques of – and prayers for – the Ministry Team’s work, the staff, and the Worship services.

From the Pastor’s Desk
It is that time of year again when we begin to prepare for Easter Sunday.  It is the season of Lent.  As part of our preparation, let us consider the following devotion written by Billy Graham.  The main reason Jesus died on the cross was to save us from our sins.  But the New Testament also stresses the importance of His suffering as an example for us.
The Greek word for “example” comes from ancient school life, and refers to something written down by the teacher, so it could be followed and copied exactly by a child learning to write.  Christ is our copybook.  We look to Him as our teacher, and by His suffering He gave us an example to follow so we can learn how suffering is to be borne.
How did He bear it?  By not giving in to despair or doubt.  By looking beyond it and seeing the glory that was to come.  By knowing the Father was with Him and would use His suffering for good.  The same can be true for us.
The author of Hebrews writes, “Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Hebrews 12:3, NIV).  Yes, consider Him.
    Let us consider Him, our example and copybook, our teacher and guide, as we each prepare our hearts during this Lenten season.

Special Offering for March
One Great Hour of Sharing is a special relief agency of the Church of the Brethren. Since its origin, 60 years ago in 1949, OGHS has been a key channel through which our Church has supported ministries of relief aid, hunger response, and disaster aid and refugee service. Among the General Board programs supported by OGHS are development work in Sudan, disaster relief projects at home and abroad, rebuilding war-torn lives and buildings in Afghanistan, rural health care in Nigeria, oversight of the Global Food Crisis Fund, and many other relief and development projects around the world. On March 8th, we all have the opportunity to share in this vital mission ministry of our denomination.

Christian Education
A new quarter of Sunday School classes begins on March 1st. Be sure to be a part of one of them.
•The International Lessons class meets in the Reynold Room and will be studying “New Creation In Christ” using some interesting material taken from Ezekiel, Luke and Ephesians. These are exciting and challenging lessons that call us to be serious about being a new person if we’ve accepted Christ.
• The Discussion class continues its study of the book The Shack, a story of forgiveness and faith.
•There is also a class for Young Adults led by Ralph Miller studying current topics of interest, and classes for children and Youth of all ages. Don’t miss this opportunity to grow in your faith by studying God’s Word.

Meat Canning
The Meat Canning Project this year will again take place at the Christian Aid Ministries, 1412 Division Highway, Ephrata on April 13 – 16, 2009. Donations will be accepted through April. The committee has decided to can only chicken again this year, because it can be purchased at a lower cost and is more widely accepted throughout the world as a meat of choice. The goal this year is to can 40,000 pounds of meat. Let’s continue to support this worthwhile project with money as well as our time.  Our Church Board has challenged us to raise $1000.00 toward this ministry. Can we do it?
