From the Pastor’s Desk
Because I’ve grown up in the church, I have many memories of Sunday School teachers who – though they had no way of ever even guessing – helped shape who I am theologically and what I’ve become. I’ve often wondered why perfectly nice folks (especially ladies, it seems) would give up their time and sanity and lock themselves in a room with socially inept and theologically void young minds. My fondest memories are those years with Mrs. M. She was a busy mother of 5, yet she chose to spend her Sunday mornings with a bunch of nose-picking, gum-chewing adolescents. She was interesting though in her teaching style, though we constantly tried to get her off the subject!! (unbelievable, right?)
One day we were discussing the topic of heaven. Foreshadowing the theologian I would some day become, I asked the obvious question I was certain everyone else was thinking (except those guys who were planning an escape out to the parking lot during Worship). I asked Mrs. M “What do you think heaven will be like?” I’ll never forget her answer. She smiled and said, “Oh, it’ll be a lot like Church.”

Now Church at that time in my life meant the Worship service, which largely consisted of four hymns with undecipherable words like diadem, Ebenezer, fetters, and tumult, some long Bible readings, and an even longer sermon and prayers - all of which contained no references at all to Mickey Mantle, Evil Knievel, go-carts or horses. That hour on Sunday morning seemed like an eternity in itself. I couldn’t imagine spending forever with my mom constantly elbowing me to keep me awake!
Lots of people have different views of what heaven will be like depending on their personal worldview. Left-Behinders picture the Rapture and all of its imagery; New Agers have all kinds of fantasies; Mormons look forward to having their own planet and being their own god, and pop culture seems to always have a new book out that’s recommended by Oprah. But they all seem to have the same goal of someday being sucked up by a giant heavenly Hoover to live in the great beyond in eternal bliss (often failing even to include God in that bliss), regardless of their life or lifestyle here on earth.
Space doesn’t permit a complete treatise on this subject. But I think sometimes we have it a bit backward. Jesus spoke often about the kingdom of heaven, even saying that it was near – and here! He even prayed that we could have heaven on earth, I think. It seems to me that if my understanding of Jesus and His message is close to true, our goal should not be so much getting people into heaven as it is getting heaven into people. We should be living the eternal life right now!
And that’s what Church and Worship and the Bible are all about. I’m grateful for Mrs. M.’s teaching, and all my mentors and teachers along the way, but what I really think we need to hear is not that the kingdom of heaven is a kind of eternal Church service, but rather a movement and a Person worth giving our all – even our lives – to be a part of.
See you in Worship.

Annual Conference 7/12 – 7/16
A full report from our delegate, Carol, will be in next month’s Lamplighter, but in the meantime, if you want to hear any of the sermons from Conference or view the 25 minute wrap-up video of Conference highlights, please see the Pastor to borrow those items. It’s not close to being there, but you can still get a ‘feel’ for part of Conference activities.

Christian Education
AHA!
Vacation Bible School was really great. We had 25 children enrolled, and they really had a good time. They learned that Jesus gives us the power to be thankful, to help others, to be brave, to live forever and to tell others about God. About 75% of the children were from the neighborhood.
A fall Power Lab one-day event is being planned for October, and look for VBS games and music at the church picnic on August 16.
Over twenty members of the congregation volunteered for all or part of the week and that’s what really made it a big success. Thank you to each of you who said yes when asked to help with this important outreach event.

Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee has begun their work of prayerfully seeking members willing to serve on Church Board and in other capacities of leadership within the Church. We ask two things of each of you: first, that you be in prayer for us as we seek to discern who God may be preparing and calling into positions of leadership, and second, that if you are asked to allow your name to be put in nomination or on the ballot for one of needed positions, that you carefully - and prayerfully - consider that God may be calling you to serve in some new or different or special way. We believe that God has given each one of us a special Spiritual gift(s) to be used for the work of His kingdom here on earth. Please consider that God may be calling you to use your gift in a new and vital way for the health and growth of this congregation.
Is God calling you? He may be - through the nominating process of this Nominating Committee.

Dunkard Valley Live
If you are into Contemporary Christian music in concert, check out the fifth annual Dunkard Valley Live concert at the Codorus COB ball field on Saturday and/or Sunday August 2 & 3, 2008. A large number of local persons, praise teams, groups, and choirs will be performing their own style of Christian music, live on stage. Worship services with dynamic speakers will be interspersed throughout the event. There will be plenty of parking, food, and fellowship on site, as well as a great variety of music and worship. See posters on bulletin boards for more info. (Rain dates - 8/9, 10)

Church Picnic
The Church Picnic/Community Event will be held on Saturday, August 16. The picnic will be from 4 pm until 7 pm. We will have games, great food, and an opportunity to simply enjoy being with friends and church family. We will have a cake walk and white elephant sale, so bring your favorite cake and a wrapped item for the white elephant sale. The dunk tank will be set up to dunk your favorite parishoner. Please plan to join us! Also, bring a dessert to share and lawn chairs.

Madison Avenue Presents Music Apreciation Worship
by Brandon R. Grady
Friends of the faith, we would cordially like to extend an invitation to you to join together in celebrating the efforts of our choirs and, most importantly, to place the universal language of music at the feet of the divine. For the third consecutive summer, the music program will present a service during which we will hear special music from the different ensembles in our congregation, sharing selections which they have enjoyed singing throughout the year. In addition, we will share in some congregational hymns together.
Nothing is better than the language of music to praise our God and to express that beauty which touches barriers humanity can’t come close to grasping with the spoken word. (continued)
Join us for this special time on Sunday, August 17, at 1 P.M. There will be a simple meal following the morning service, after which we will share in this time of worship together. If you have any questions, feel free to ask any of the persons involved with directing our ensembles.
CHURCH BOARD REPORT
Church board met Tuesday, July 8th. There was a very positive discussion on the blessings we are reaping with the opportunities for ministry and outreach through the Endowment fund. With the generosity of many, this has become an extremely valuable means of financial security, a renewable fund for many opportunities for us to do God’s will.
Our church sent 212 health kits to New Windsor this year. Thanks to all who helped with physical and financial contributions.
A very successful Bible School was carried out this year with up to 23 kids having fun while receiving guidance in the Word of God. Many thanks to all those who participated in this event with a great opportunity to reach out to our neighbors.
The Evangelism committee has set August 16th as the Church Picnic, and following the picnic, on August 17th will be our Music Appreciation Event. This will be at 1 PM this year.
October 4th will be a Fall Festival with a Market Place featuring fair trade items.
Another upcoming event will be a Rally Day/Bring a Friend Sunday.
As for the bus, thirty letters were sent to agencies that often have vehicles that may meet our needs.available for donation or reasonable cost.
We are evaluating our insurance by requesting a second option for the comparison of our current insurance package along with those of another major carrier. This will continue with a final decision by Stewardship and Finance Commission in August. Another commission commitment was reactivated, the renovation of the cellar. A furnace inspection was completed with some corrective action required - although it passed.
A meeting on the possible restructuring of the Board will be on the agenda very soon.
Preparation for budget is starting with a request to all commissions to have their budget proposals to Dick Rishel by the September Board Meeting.
Next meeting will be August 12th
Board Chair,
The Properties continues to keep busy in efforts to maintain all the needed repairs that pop up around Church. We thank you for telling us whenever you notice something broken or missing or not working properly (light bulbs, faucets, doors, etc.), because we don’t always notice them. We’ll address the problem as soon as possible.
And special thanks to those who see a small problem and take the initiative to correct it right away. Just let us know whenever you’ve done something so we can keep an eye on it in the future. (Thanks Mary, for taking care of the window.)

Dear Lord, I Forgot
Dear Lord, I forgot to thank you today – Dear Lord, I forgot to thank you today –
For bringing me through the night;                For food and shelter and clothes;
Giving me strength to get out of bed – All very important in our world -
As the sun is shining so bright. Couldn’t live without them, I know.

Dear Lord, I forgot to thank you today – Dear Lord, I forgot to thank you today –
For giving me work I must do;                       For the cross and trials we bear;
They fill me with joys and blessings – I could never ever praise your enough -
As I share your love, you see. From sin You have set me free.
This year’s Chicken Barbecue, Car Show & Auction on Saturday, August 9, will be truly special. Not only is it the 48th annual event at The Brethren Home Community, but it also is part of their Centennial Celebration. Much has changed since members of the Southern PA District began this mission of caring Christian service in 1908 at the original Huntsdale “home,” but the constant has been the selfless support of Brethren churches.
Help to make this year’s attendance an all time-high! Invite friends and family, bring groups from church - this is a day of fun and fellowship, and it’s for a cause that has meant much for many for 100 years! More info at - www.brethrenhome.org or call 624 - 2161

To Think About……
Rivers gain a lot more attention than the little tributaries that create them. You can name some of the great rivers of the world, but you probably cannot name any of their tributaries. However, without the tributaries, there would be no river. And remember also, that the smaller streams, while less well-known, are always found on a higher elevation.
Some of our lives are like those tributary streams. We may never be well-known for anything we do. But it is our role to provide the ‘pure water’ from the higher elevation that enables another to be a mighty river of influence. Who are you mentoring in the faith?

The Lamplighter
July 2008
Editor: Lillian Geltz

From the Pastor’s Desk
When I meditated on the word GUIDANCE, I kept seeing “dance” at the end of the word. I remember reading that doing God’s will is a lot like dancing. When two people try to lead, nothing feels right. The movement doesn’t flow with the music, and everything is quite uncomfortable and jerky. When one person realizes that, and lets the other lead, both bodies begin to flow with the music. One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge to the back or by pressing lightly in one direction or another. It’s as if two become one body, moving gracefully. The dance takes surrender, willingness, and attentiveness from one person and gentle guidance and skill from the other.
My eyes drew back to the word GUIDANCE. When I saw “G,” I thought of God, followed by “u” and “i.” “God ‘u’ and ‘i’ dance.” God, you and I dance. As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust that I would get guidance about my life. Once again, I became willing to let God lead.

My prayer for you today is that God’s blessings and mercies be upon you on this day and every day. May you abide in God as God abides in you. Dance together with God, trusting God to lead and guide you through each season of your life….and I hope you dance!

Sunday School News
Join us for the summer series of Sunday School studies. The International Lesson Class is using the lesson book Images of Christ as a basis for discussion and learning. The series of lessons is based on Scripture from Hebrews, James, and the gospels. We will look at some familiar - and some not so familiar - images of Jesus in Scripture and see how our understanding of Jesus is influenced by these different images. Join us for some challenging and exciting times of fellowship, study, and learning.
The Discussion Class will continue to be working on the denomination’s 300th anniversary devotional book Fresh From the Word. It’s an interesting series of devotionals, written by leaders of our denomination, that will challenge your thinking and help you grow.
The Young Adult Class continues to meet in the Library under the leadership of Ralph Miller with their own chosen study topics. There are also classes for Youth, Jr Hi, and children.

Annual Conference 7/12 – 7/16
Annual Conference is in Richmond, VA this year, from Saturday 7/12 thru Wednesday, 7/16. With a theme of “Surrendered to God; Transformed by Christ; Empowered by the Spirit,,” Moderator Jim Beckwith will lead conference attendees through the five days of activity that serve as much as a family reunion as a working session. Several important business items (some of the most impacting and controversial business in years!), innumerable insight sessions, powerful Worship services, great Bible study options, great music and group singing, and much more await those who choose to be better informed and challenged in their faith walk. The Pastors can get you more info if you are planning to attend. Please remember the Conference and all the delegates and attendees in your prayers, as the decisions made there have a lasting effect in our denomination’s ministries and our witness to the world. Our delegate this year is Carol Kauffman.

CHURCH BOARD REPORT
Church Board met Tuesday, June 10th. As usual, Board members are busy with the many opportunities and challenges that involve being stewards of the Church and workers for our Lord.
The Endowment Fund continues with many opportunities for ministry over the ongoing year. The Evangelism Committee has set August 16th as the date for the Church Picnic, and October 4th will be a Fall Festival with a Market Place (Flea Market) and events with apples and pies on the agenda.
The 24-hour prayer vigil was determined a success with many members volunteering to pray for designated periods of time.
Upcoming events include an offering for Bucket Kits on July 6th, the yearly Heifer Project, a special collection for victims of the disasters in Myramar and China (supported by the Endowment Fund), and a Meat Canning donation fund. Another event being pursued will be a Rally Day/Bring a Friend Sunday.
The new amplifier for the classroom area is now installed and working. A new digital marquee for the front of the church is being investigated. As for the bus, letters will be sent to local fire companies who, we have been informed, often have vehicles available that may meet our needs.
A meeting on the possible restructuring of the Board will be on the agenda very soon.
Don’t forget the upcoming Board Meeting on July 8th.

From the Pastor’s Desk
It’s that time of the year again! School’s out - or almost so - and the kids are excited about summer and all its activities. Summer is the time for many new and exciting and fun-filled things to do. It’s the time of vacations, and camps, and travel, and people on the go. It’s also the time many people go Church shopping, or at least Church visiting, because of the many changes in schedules that prevent their attending their home Church. I would encourage you to worship at other churches during your times of vacation and travel this summer, to get an appreciation for worship in different settings and to experience the many varied ways we, as a family of faith, worship God. And be sure to invite others to worship here with you each Sunday you are home.

If you have the opportunity to bring back a bulletin from any Worship services you attend, the pastor would appreciate seeing them. Let’s see how far and wide we can worship God this summer. And be sure to remember the ongoing ministries and expenses here at home while we’re away.
To the credit of an anonymous author I read recently, my wish for all of you this summer is that you have enough. Very simply, I wish for you to have enough:
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your longing.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final goodbye.

Bible Challenge Questions
1. Which prophet predicted the exile of Israel would last for 70 years?
2. Where can we find the story Jesus told of building houses on a rock or in sand?
3. Fill in the blanks: “Love must be ______. Hate what is _____; cling to what is _____.

Ministry Commission
The Ministry & Worship Commission continues to work with the staff on matters related to the ongoing ministries here at MACOB. Filling the pulpit for Pastor Godfrey when he is away will be Ralph Miller on June 15th and Pastor Kim on June 22nd. In addition, Brandon Grady will be preaching on Sunday, June 29th. We continue to seek counsel and input regarding the addition of a Youth Pastor to our ministry staff here at MACOB.
Your input, suggestions, critiques, and observations of our staff and Worship are always welcome. The Ministry and Worship Comm. currently consists of Dave Wolfe, Sue Grady, and Luke Keeny, with Brenda Laughman and Brenda Linebaugh as lay members.

Out of the Office
Pastor Godfrey will be on vacation from June 9th thru the 22nd. In celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary, he and Gerry will be traveling to Nova Scotia. On the way they will stop in Rangeley, Maine (site of their honeymoon 40 years ago) for a quick visit and a four day hike on the Appalachian Trail, which passes through that area.
During that time period, in the absence of the pastor, requests for pastoral care should be left on the answering machine at the Church office, or you may call directly to Pastor Kim Gingerich, Ralph Miller (Deacon and Licensed Minister), Dick Rishel (Stewards ), or Dave Wolfe (ministry chair).

Camp Eder
Camp Eder is looking forward to an exciting summer of outdoor ministry. You can be a part of that ministry in a number of ways. Several different job openings are available, as well as many volunteer opportunities (like being a volunteer counselor for a week - excitement plus!) to help with the many aspects

VBS – AHA!
The dates for Vacation Bible School have been changed to June 23 – 27 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. The curriculum is “Power Lab” and you will soon be asked to volunteer if you haven’t already.
If you have anything that we can use to decorate that will look “scientific” or lab coats we could borrow, see Becky. Likewise, any suggestions to improve VBS are welcome.
“Train up a child in the way he should go.”

June 10 Picnic/Meeting Ness Residence 10 AM
July 8 Trip to New Windsor
Six of our ladies will be attending Women’s Camp on Monday, June 2nd. We will leave the Church at 7:30 AM. Our custom is to take “cookies for camp,” which we donate for the summer. If you care to send a donation of cookies with us, have them at the Church by Sunday, June 1st.
Bernice has once again invited us for a picnic meeting on June 10th. We will have a short meeting at 10 AM, then share lunch, bringing foods to enjoy.
Also, we continue to assemble “Health Kits” and plan our annual trip to New Windsor on July 8th, leaving the Church at 9:30 AM.

Living Tree
A tree stood one a lonely hill – Then I turned and I looked -
No life to be found within it; At a tall healthy tree.
The branches were bare, hung forlorn – Whose branches reached upward to Heaven -
It looked like it would fall any minute.        It filled my heart with hope anew;
And the joy of loving and living.
How it saddened my heart –
As I looked at this tree Help us, Lord, to be a tall and healthy tree -
And thought how life can be wasted  –         One that reaches wherever we’re needed;
For many a soul has much to give ; To touch some soul who’s weary and worn -
Joy of giving they’ve never tasted. And know the joy of living completed.
Written 7/23/83 by the Lord and Angel

Answers to Bible Challenge questions:
1. Jeremiah (Daniel 9:2) 2. Matthew 7:24 – 27) 3. sincere, evil, good (Romans12:9)

Summer schedule !!!!!
As we begin our summer season, remember that our schedule for Sunday School and Worship remains the same all year ‘round. Sunday School begins at 9:00 AM and Worship begins at 10:15 AM. Join us all summer long for some exciting times of Worship and praise (in air-conditioned comfort!!), and be sure to regularly invite a friend or neighbor.

A Special Graduation
May and June… the months that evoke celebrations of graduation from high school and universities. This May is no different as Brandon Grady from Madison Avenue graduated from Bethany Seminary on May 3rd with a Master’s Degree in Divinity with an emphasis on Peace Studies. While all graduation ceremonies are joyous events to validate and recognize all the hours of reading, writing, and discussing ideas, philosophies and theologies old and new, Brandon’s graduation incorporated an additional element of accomplishment. Despite Brandon’s physical blindness, Brandon envisioned a life of ministry and service and accomplished his goal. Perhaps none of us can truly understand the dedication, tenacity and dogged determination this goal required of Brandon, yet all the while he has maintained an optimism and joy of spirit that buoys all he meets.
In recognition and support of Brandon’s endeavors and accomplishments, a retinue of approximately fifteen friends and family members from MACOB made the trip to Bethany Seminary in Richmond, Indiana. The entire group, a major part the MACOB Praise Team that sings with Brandon, attended the Saturday morning graduation ceremony at Nicarry Chapel. Later that afternoon, the group attended a baccalaureate service delivered by the seminary graduates, using the theme of transformative cleansing powers of the Holy Spirit.
The end of the day was devoted to a praise music concert at West Richmond COB, arranged through Brandon’s ongoing ministry through the common language of music. The MACOB Praise Team had the privilege of offering a night of music and sharing with fellow Indiana brothers and sisters. Likewise, the Praise Team sang at the Richmond Friends Meeting House and joined voices with the Friends’ choir in worship.
All who participated in this joyous weekend of celebration and worship agree that this “road trip” was wonderful for all the individuals who participated – offering camaraderie, worship and more. We also extend our best wishes to Brandon Grady as he follows the new path - wherever the Holy Spirit leads him on his own new journey in ministry.

The Lamplighter
May 2008
Editor: Lillian Geltz

From the Pastor’s Desk
The recent Board retreat held here at Church received mixed reviews from those in attendance. The speaker for part of the morning – Byron Borger – did an excellent job of presenting his topic and challenging us in our faith walk. However, his topic, the importance of reading as a spiritual discipline and its influence on leadership, was not appreciated by all in attendance. The ensuing discussion about our current leadership was very open and honest and caused each of us to think seriously about our current ministry and its future direction and viability.
The subject of a felt need for the addition of a Youth Pastor was discussed at length; someone with appropriate skills and time to formulate a Youth (and Young Adult) program(s), including the visitation of potential families and current inactive families of youth and young adults was felt to be of primary importance to the future ministry here at MACOB. Funding such a position, its effect on current staff, and the need for relief for current Youth personnel were major topics of discussion as we brainstormed together.

Though the current trend in Worship attendance is disheartening to many, there is need for celebration within the congregation. Solid stewardship, participation in special projects, ongoing outreach attempts, vibrant worship, and a serious understanding of our need for participation in Bible study by many of our members are all signs of spiritual health. Our challenge is to enlarge that committed group of persons to include more of our marginal and inactive families, as well as to invite (invite, invite) others to Worship with us. One major hurdle seems to be how to convince those who feel left out – those who are not a part of an ongoing Bible study or Sunday school class or other spiritual formation group – how can we convince them thy are welcome to join in the activities, and by not being a part of a small group, they are only cheating themselves of great opportunities for growth and relationship.
Can we reverse the downward trend? Absolutely! Will it be easy? No. Are you willing to be part of the solution?
One easy available opportunity for every one of us is to invite someone we know – friend, family member, coworker, neighbor – to come study and/or Worship with us. Many of us have members of our own extended family who have become inactive over the years. If we’d put some time and effort into cultivating friendships and invite those friends to worship with us, we’d see a dramatic increase in participation. If every current active family, over the course of this year, would make it a goal to befriend and invite one other family to worship, our fellowship would double in a year!
Are you willing to be a worker for God’s kingdom? You can be in ministry - no, you are in ministry. Can we be serious about the vitality of the future of this congregation?

Bible Challenge Questions
1. What is the ‘nickname’ most folks give to the 13th chapter of 1st Corinthians?
2. On what occasion were all the disciples thought by the general public to be drunk?
3. Jesus once said that Solomon in all his glory was not clothed with such splendor as … what?

Ministry Commission
At our most recent Commission meeting discussion centered on the wisdom, necessity, and timing of the addition of a Youth Pastor to the staff here at MACOB. Possibilities for funding, reduction of time for the lead pastor, where to concentrate the efforts of a Youth Pastor, the current burnout of leadership, and many more relevant issues were discussed.
Arrangements have been made for filling the pulpit during the Pastors’ times of vacation and travel (Annual Conference, Camp Eder, Seminars, etc.) as well as covering for pastoral needs whenever one of them is away. We are blessed to have such depth of leadership and staff to handle such needs in the absence of a Pastor.
We continue to seek your input/ comments/suggestions/ critiques of - and prayers for - the Commission’s work, the staff, and the Worship services.

May is Messenger month!
Be inspired! Be informed…connected!
The heart and soul of Messenger magazine is inspiration, information and connection – the threads that bind our Brethren family. The annual cost is $14.50; first time subscribers pay only $7.25. Please see Treva Gingerich to place your subscription.

VBS – AHA!
The dates for Vacation Bible School have been changed from June 23 – 27 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. The curriculum is “Power Lab” and you will soon be asked to volunteer if you haven’t already.
If you have anything that we can use to decorate that will look “scientific” or lab coats we could borrow, see Becky. Likewise, any suggestions to improve VBS are welcome.

Easter Egg Hunt
Thanks to the many people who helped with the Easter Egg hunts. We had 13 youth for the flashlight hunt and have already had inquiries about doing it again next year. For the younger children on Saturday morning, 17 children attended in spite of snow early that day.
Many people contributed to the success of these outreaches to the community events, including the neighborhood association. The letter received from them follows:

Dear …friends at the Madison Avenue Church,
The Avenues Association is pleased and gratified to have collaborated with you on the two neighborhood Easter egg hunts this year. We feel both events were a great success for the neighborhood children. They fulfill our purpose of building a commitment to the community among our young people.
We thank you for being such a good neighbor in this area of the city.
Sincerely,
June 2 Women’s Camp at Eder
The joy of springtime is looking forward to our annual fellowship with Bermudian/Lakeview Ladies. We had 38 in attendance as we shared the morning with them in April 8th. Also, 7 of us attended the Women’s Spring Luncheon at the Faith Community Church.

Our Annual Mother/Daughter Banquet is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th at 6 PM. It will be a covered dish with meat provided. Pat Anderson is our entertainment with the 300th Anniversary of the Church of the Brethren as our theme. Come & bring your friends.
If you are interested in Women’s Camp, it is June 2 – 3. Several of us are going for Monday, June 2nd as is our custom. We need your registration by May 12th.
The theme is “Together: body, Soul and Spirit,” a great time of renewal. Notify Bernice or Phyllis if you want to register or attend.

That Special Glow
Are you a part-time Christian – Read the Bible to receive instruction -
When it’s convenient to say yes; Witness, the reward eternal you know.
Or are you a full-time laborer – If you’re employed by our Savior -
Giving to God your very best? You will have that “special glow.”

There’s a definite job description – The retirement plan is glorious -
Meaning we give to God our all;        Far greater than here down below;
He knows if we’re sincere, ready – If you’ll only work for the Savior -
To take seriously the Christian call. Benefits will continue to flow.

You need no previous experience – Written by the Lord & Angel
On-the-job-training is best; 1/31/01
Just pray, be ready and willing –
God will take care of the rest.

Church Board Report
Church Board met Tuesday April 15th, 2008.
The first event of our Evangelism committee’s plan to attract interest from the neighborhood to the Church will already have taken place on April 19 by the time you read this. Another event on May 31st will open the Church for Food, Games and Karaoke. Then on August 16th, the Church Picnic is planned. The last event planned, for October 4th, will be the Fall Festival with a Market Place (Flea Market) and events with apples and pies on the agenda.
An ongoing pursuit for a plan to improve the Church Board is also underway. One of the upcoming board meetings will be dedicated to this with support from District to facilitate the meeting. The idea is to reduce the number of people required to run the Board on a month-to-month basis by using more individual volunteers to run the specific events and services, etc.
Another subject of high importance and concern is the search for someone to become a youth minister for the church. Several meetings with ideas for direction are underway for this. Your prayers are strongly requested for this to ask for guidance and direction for this pursuit. Ministry and Worship will spearhead this and make recommendations to the board as details and candidates become available.
The new Youth SS Curriculum DVD series from NEST Videos has arrived. This will provide many learning opportunities for youth and young teens over the next few years.
Other upcoming events will be the Mother & Daughter Banquet on May 13th and Father & Son Banquet on June 11th.
New pursuits include the search for a vehicle to replace the bus that was just sold. The plan is to purchase something smaller and more useable on a more frequent basis. The Stewardship and Finance committee is working on this. A new sound system for the areas outside of the sanctuary is being purchased and will soon be installed. It will be capable of handling up to six mics or other electronic attachments, such as CD player options, etc.
Plans for the Vacation Bible School are underway with the topic named “Power Lab” chosen for the evenings of June 23rd thru 27th .
There will not be a May Board meeting as the Mother & Daughter Banquet will be held on the date for the next meeting and no pressing business is forthcoming at this time.
Your Board and committees continue to serve our God and the Church with ideas and service, taking them in many directions.
Next Board meeting will be June 10th, so note this on your calendar.

24-Hour Prayer Vigil for Spiritual Guidance:
Thursday, May 1st on the National Day of Prayer
May 1st has been designated as the National Day of Prayer. If MACOB is truly seeking to be more obedient to the voice of God and His will and direction for us, we need to begin by coming before His throne of grace in prayer. We would ask for everyone at Madison Ave COB to be in prayer, but most of all we are requesting that you would set aside a time to be in intentional prayer - at home or at the church. A sign-up list has been posted at the church. If you are unable to sign up, please call the office number - 854-1885 - and let us know the time that you will be covering the Church in prayer. The Church will be open on Thursday, May 1st from 6:00 am to Friday, May 2nd at 6:00am.
Suggested focus for prayer: Spiritual Guidance for the Church of the Brethren worldwide & all leadership; District Office, Board and the churches in the Southern PA District; Spiritual Guidance, wisdom, discernment for Madison Ave COB, it’s leadership and for yourself.
Thank you for participating in this endeavor as we, the body of Christ, joyfully, expectantly and prayerfully, seek together to know His mind and will for our congregation!

Answers to Bible Challenge questions:
1. The “love” chapter 2. Pentecost (Acts 2:13) 3. Lilies (Matt. 6:28)

Update on Donna Hash.
Donna would like everyone to know that her health, while still an ongoing issue, seems to have improved somewhat recently. Also, she has entered a contest in which she has written a 500 word composition for publication in a magazine. Interestingly enough, her story is about a boy who received a talking computer. Now where would she get an idea for that?
Continue to remember Donna. She loves cards, emails, and visits! Her email address is dhash16@netzero.com and her address and phone # are in our directory.

Looking Ahead…..
For those of you who were able to be a part of the two combined nights of music that Brandon instituted with MACOB and the Conestoga COB, here’s some good news for you. There’s another one in the planning! On June 1st at 6PM at the Conestoga Church, we will again join with the musicians of both congregations as choirs, praise teams and both congregations raise their voices in musical praise. Put the date on your calendar now. You won’t want to miss this evening of music. We might even be able to Listen to the Angels Sing!!!!!

From the Pastor’s Desk
I guess I’ve always enjoyed the little brain-teaser type quizzes you come across from time to time. They serve a very worthwhile purpose for me. Anytime I’m feeling a bit arrogant or smart or smart-alecky, one little quiz will usually humble me quite quickly and easily. It’s always amazing to me how simple some things are and yet we overlook (okay, I overlook) the obvious. Sometimes the answers to life’s most challenging questions are so obvious and so right in front of us, I marvel at our ability (my ability) to miss them!
Ready for a quick quiz? The answers are really easy, so don’t spend a lot of time dissecting them. No trick questions. I promise they’re all perfectly obvious and simple. (answers at bottom of article – no cheating!)

1. If a red brick house is made of red bricks and a blue brick house is made of blue bricks and a yellow brick house is made of yellow bricks, what is a greenhouse made of?
2. You are competing in a race, and you overtake the person in second place. In what position are you now?
3. You are competing in a race, and you overtake the runner in last place. What place are you now in?
4. Okay, now this one is obvious………… Marie’s father has five daughters. Their names are as follows: # 1 Chacha # 2 Cheche #3 Chichi #4 Chocho and # 5 ??????? What is #5’s name? (Look.
Think… it’s easy)
I guess it just makes me wonder how many of the solutions to our everyday problems are right under our noses and we don’t see them. I wonder how many of our spiritual problems have simple, obvious answers but we’re too dense to recognize them. I wonder how often I’ve overlooked simple obvious direction from the Bible for whatever difficulty I think I’m engaged in simply because I’m not reading, not listening, or not paying attention to God speaking. How easy it is (for me) to ignore the simple clear message of God and His Word.
Answers
1. A greenhouse is made of glass. Isn’t that pretty obvious?
2. If you answered that you are in first place, then you made a tiny mistake. You overtook the second place runner, so you have taken over that place; therefore, you are now in second place. Don’t fret.. The next one is easier.
3. If you answered second-last, you are wrong! Think about this….how can you overtake the person running last. If you’re behind them they can’t be last! The answer is impossible. Okay, so this one was a trick question. Sorry.
4. If you answered Chuchu, I’m sorry. It was clearly stated that Marie’s father had five daughters. So one of them must be named Marie, right? Whatever made you think it was Chuchu? That’s not even a name!!!

Bible Challenge Questions
1. For what is a disciple named Cleopas best known in Scripture?
2. To whom was Jesus talking when he said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim to see, your guilt remains.”
3. Who was it that recognized Peter as having been with Jesus (on the night of Jesus’ trial)?

Church Board Report
Church Board met Tuesday March 11th. The February meeting was canceled due to the weather. The Oyster Feed, February 9th, was a great success. Also, the motor home has been sold and delivered to its new owners, a Gospel group from Louisiana. Thanks to Jerry Duncan and Dick Rishel on their extensive efforts to accomplish this!
Some updates to the rest rooms have been completed as well as old water fountains have been removed.
The Endowment Fund continues with many opportunities for ministry over the ongoing year.
The Evangelism committee has plans for several new events planned to attract interest from the neighborhood and the Church. April 9th & May 31st the Church will be open for food, games and karaoke. August 16th is the Church Picnic, and October 4th will be a Fall Festival with a Market Place (Flea Market ) and events with apples and pies on the agenda.
Also in March, a Board Retreat was held with ideas presented on how to revise and update the Board so it may require fewer people and meetings. More on this in the future with an upcoming Board Meeting planned to discuss this thoroughly. Also, a great speaker, Byron Borger, made a presentation that explored the importance of reading and learning and what culture changes are taking place that affect churches from both youth and adult perspectives. This retreat was well attended.
A new DVD series from NEST Videos with a Youth SS Curriculum has been approved for purchase. This series will offer many learning opportunities for youth and young teens for many years. Joy El Ministry has gone well with only 5-6 weeks left.
Your Board has been busy, committing to serve our God and the Church with ideas and service, moving in many directions.
Don’t forget the upcoming Board Meeting, April 15th. Note: this is not the normal week.
How Wide Thy Love
“How Wide Thy Love,” Oh Holy One- We too have often faltered -
Who created heaven and earth.            Doubted, denied and betrayed;
Who fills us with a peace and hope - In our words, thoughts and deeds-
Each dawn a start of rebirth. But our hope has not been swayed.

Forgiving our sins, Oh Holy One - For God so loved the world-
When we cannot forgive ourselves. That He gave His Only Son.
Because, Oh Lord, you never give up - So that through His precious blood -
Your work began with twelve The Lord’s will shall be done.
Written 3/21/89 by the Lord and Angel
Just ordinary men they were –
You called to come and follow;
Who doubted, denied and betrayed –
Sometimes their faith was hollow.

The Lamplighter
March 2008
Editor: Lillian Geltz

From the Pastor’s Desk
In recent weeks I’ve read several books and articles concerning the topics of Church Growth, revitalizing declining churches, the spiritual state of the Church in the US, and factors leading to Church growth and vitality. The more I read, the more I am convinced that MACOB has all the necessary ingredients to embark on an intentional journey of spiritual and numerical growth. We seem to be missing only one thing: an excited willingness to begin the process.
Church revitalization and growth experts have found several key factors that are vital for progress in growing spiritual disciples. They include; 1. An increase in the importance and participation of an active prayer ministry 2. Renewed faith and belief in Jesus and dedication to His Word 3. Laypeople becoming more active in leadership 4. Increased emphasis on mission (outside the Church), evangelism, and community involvement and 5. A Worship service that is described as upbeat, celebrative, orderly, and exciting.
One of the interesting findings that ran through much of my reading is that the greatest hindrance to churches becoming active and growing has to do with attitude. Too many people are not willing to take the risk required to institute changes to meet a changing culture and society around us. The attitude of we just don’t have the resources, or we don’t have the time, we don’t have the leadership; we can’t, we don’t, …….
Overcoming our own negative outlook may well be the biggest obstacle we face in risking change and growth. But I am convinced we have the right people with the right skills, and, with the right attitude, we can follow Jesus’ job description for every one of us: “Go, and make disciples, teaching them to obey The Word….”
One of the most vital characteristic of many churches that are growing and have experienced great strides in renewed growth is the emphasis on prayer. As we prepare ourselves and our congregation for growth, let us all take a more intentional approach to our own prayer life. Join with two or three or more others and pray for the vision God would have us follow in making disciples for Him. Form a small group to study and pray and be ready to be surprised by what God can do with someone (or a whole congregation) who really gets serious about their faith. Read, study, pray. Let’s grow together.

Bible Challenge Questions
1. The Apostle Paul had a unique effect on the life of a young man named Eutychus.
In what way?
2. Who was famous for preaching to a whole pile of dry bones?
3. Who is being referred to: “Who, being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing….”?
Special Offering for March
One Great Hour of Sharing is a special relief agency of the Church of the Brethren. Since its origin, 59 years ago in 1949, OGHS has been a key channel through which our Church has supported ministries of relief aid, hunger response, and disaster aid and refugee service. Among the General Board programs supported by OGHS are development work in Sudan, disaster relief projects at home and abroad, rebuilding war-torn lives and buildings in Afghanistan, rural health care in Nigeria, oversight of the Global Food Crisis Fund, and many other relief and development projects around the world. On March 9th, we all have the opportunity to share in this vital mission ministry of our denomination.
Meat Canning
The Meat Canning Project this year will again take place at the Christian Aid Ministries, 1412 Division Highway, Ephrata on March 24 – 27 & March 31 – April 3, 2008. Donations will be accepted through April. The committee has decided to can only chicken again this year, because it can be purchased at a lower cost and is more widely accepted throughout the world as a meat of choice. The goal this year is to can 70,000 pounds of meat. Let’s continue to support this worthwhile project with money as well as our time. Volunteer sign-up sheets are in the side Narthex. We will have at least one car going. If you can join us, please sign the sheet on the side bulletin board.

Church Board Retreat
All Church Board members should make a special effort to attend this year’s Board Retreat scheduled for Saturday morning, March 8th, from 8:00 AM til noon. With leadership by Byron Borger for part of the time, we’ll look at the importance of reading and leadership within our spiritual life. We will also spend some time working on plans for realigning our administrative board into a more streamlined and effective Ministry Team concept. It is important that all members, including elected, lay, and ex-officio members, be present for this time of spiritual growth and planning - two activities that will affect (and effect) our future ministry here at MACOB.

Answers to Bible Challenge questions:
1. Paul’s preaching put him to sleep; he fell and died. Paul raised him from death! (Acts 20:9ff)
2. Ezekiel (Ezekiel 37) 3. Jesus (Phil. 2:6)

EASTER EGG HUNTS
Yes, two hunts. One will be the Thursday evening before Easter for ages 12 and up - hunting eggs by flashlight. That’s March 20, as soon as it gets dark. Watch for the exact time in church bulletins and a special announcement on the church website.
The second is our traditional egg hunt for ages 11 and under at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22. The Neighborhood Association has offered to help and we are planning these two events to reach out to our neighbors as well as families related to the church. If you can volunteer for either or both
events, contact Dave Wolfe or Becky Rishel.
If the weather is bad for either date, we will move indoors.

Women’s Fellowship
Don’t forget the Faith Dinner at First Church of the Brethren on March 29th. The entertainment will be Victoria Smith, and the proceeds will benefit Brethren Disaster Relief.
See Treva Gingerich for tickets and more information.

Your Joy Proclaim
With thankful hearts we humbly pray- There are those who on this day -
As it is once again Thanksgiving Day.        Never take the time to pause, pray;
When families gather to share in love - Taking for granted the blessings given-
Realizing the blessings sent from above. Running to and fro, so fast they’re living.

We’re grateful, Lord, for all you’ve done- Years go by, precious time is lost-
As we begin each day ‘til setting sun. Take the time to count the cost.
For health, strength and daily food - Serving wisely in Christ’s name -
All that is proper, right and good. To all the world, “your joy proclaim.”
February 2008

•From the Pastor’s Desk
I’d like to ask everyone’s support as we enter this new year - 2008. It’s quite evident that attendance here at MACOB has been on a steady decline for a number of years. Many of our long-time faithful members who were in Church regularly years ago have all gone on. We have not done a good job of evangelizing new people into the congregation. All that adds up to a growing concern about how long we will remain a viable congregation if we allow this trend to continue.
I am asking that you not invite anyone new to Church this year. I think we need to devote this year to preparing ourselves for the mission we are supposed to be doing. I’d like to make the year 2009 be the year that we increase our congregation by 50%. To do that, we will need to have something to offer new members in the way of a living, working, growing faith in our own lives, as well as a definite idea of how to disciple and assimilate new folks into the faith and into the ministries of our congregation.

I see this as a three-step effort. First, we must commit ourselves to Christ, then commit ourselves to community, and then third, we can commit ourselves to growth and development.
First: committing ourselves to Christ means a focused, intentional effort at prayer and Bible study. We must commit to regular, daily prayer times, seeking God’s will and direction for our ministry here at MACOB. That prayer must be accompanied by reading and study of His Word - to see where God would lead us in ministry.
Second: committing ourselves to community. That means communing not only with God – in prayer and study, but also in concert with our fellow brothers and sisters as we pray and study together in small groups. Everyone should be following a daily discipline of personal prayer and study time. But in addition to that, everyone should also be growing in relationship within the body of Christ by participating in one or more small group study activities, specifically Bible studies and prayer times.
Third: After a year of study and spiritual growth – personal and relational – we must begin an intentional time of inviting others to study and worship with us. Before we do that, however, we must develop our own internal groups for welcoming, discipling, visiting, encouraging, teaching, and including these new folks in the ministries and worship of our congregation. We must be prepared ahead of time for new people coming in - with programs and teaching and training or they will visit and leave. We will have to be intentional in our efforts to help them grow spiritually just as we are maturing.
In order for this to be a success, for this whole year, we must devote ourselves to prayer - focused and sincere prayer seeking God’s direction for us to commit to God and His Word. Prayer must be the starting point; study, the focal point; and preparation and ongoing planning must be priorities if we are to be successful at introducing new folks to the faith and to our congregation.
I’m suggesting disbanding all present small groups and reforming new groups. Everyone should be responsible for asking 2 – 5 other people to join them regularly (at least twice a month) for study and prayer. To the extent that everyone is willing to be a part of this intentional time of study, prayer, and preparation will be the same extent to which we will be successful in our mission.

•Faith Dinner
The York First COB will be hosting a FAITH DINNER on Saturday, March 29th, 2008 at 6:00 PM to benefit the Disaster Relief Auction. Tickets are $15.00. Victoria Smith will be providing the evening’s entertainment as she shares her joy and love of our Savior through song. For ticket information, please see Treva Gingerich.

•Answers to Bible Challenge questions:
1. Jesus (Matt. 17:2) 2. Nicodemus (John 3:3) 3. Samaritan woman (John 4:7)
•Church Board Report
Church Board met Tuesday January 8th. This is the first meeting of the year for commissions under their new leadership with the newly assigned members. From the sound of the reports, we are in good hands, for many commissions already had reports covering events that will occur throughout the year. Among these are the Souper Bowl Sunday, an Oyster Feed on February 9th and many more desirable upcoming events.
Action on the motor home is still ongoing with a few prospects pending. Also upcoming are updates to the rest rooms.
The Endowment Fund is in great shape with many opportunities for ministry in the upcoming year.
Another important event will be a meeting for planning some new events for the next year. Hope is that we can encourage some new people for participation and develop new activities that will attract interest from the neighborhood.
Don’t forget the upcoming Council Meeting on January 27th. This is your opportunity to air your issues and concerns for the church. All your ideas are important - whether positive or negative. Without your opinions many important changes will never occur. Please plan to stay and participate. If you can’t be there, be sure to express your concerns to Board members who can present them for you.

•Sunday School Electives
The Adult classes are entering the last month of this quarter, but it’s not too late to join some exciting and challenging discussion and learning. In addition to the International Lesson Quarterly studying ‘God’s Call to the Christian Community,’ there is a discussion class using the exciting new 300th anniversary devotional ‘Fresh From the Word,’ a challenging book of meditations that was made available to everyone of us through the Church Board. (We hope that you are using yours daily.) There is also a special class for Young Adults called “Let’s Talk” and classes for Youth and children of all ages.

•Church Council Meeting
With our annual year-end Council meeting set for Sunday, January 27th, a report of the discussions and actions was not available before this issue went to press. A report will be in the next Lamplighter, as well as posted on the bulletin board and on the Church’s website (www.madisonavechurch.org )

•Fellowship & Recreation Commission
The F&R Commission is busy planning a schedule for 2008. The first event is the annual Oyster Supper, scheduled for Saturday evening, February 9th, 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM. The menu includes: fried oysters and oyster stew, fish, hot dogs, slaw, apple sauce, pickles, etc. and dessert and beverage. (Donations of desserts are appreciated). Cost will be by donation (free-will offering). Snow date : 2/16/08.

•Bible Challenge Questions
1. When Moses came down from Mt. Sinai after meeting with God, his face shone with a bright light. In Scripture, who else is recorded as having his face (and clothes) shining with a brilliant light?
2. To whom did Jesus say, “no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”?
3. From whom did Jesus ask for a drink when He was in Sychar, Samaria?

• Missions & Service
Continue to bring your cans of soup and one dollar bills for the Souper Bowl Drive on Sunday, February 3rd. The JR HI class is sponsoring this outreach.
Now is the time to renew or purchase a membership to the Brethren Home Auxiliary. This is a way to support the auxiliary projects. The cost is $3/year or $30/lifetime membership. See Treva Gingerich.
Also, meat canning is coming in March; the District has a goal of canning 70,000 pounds of chicken this year, 10,000 less than in previous years. Our special offering during February will be for the meat-canning project. Co-sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic and SoPA Districts, we are seeking volunteers to help in the processing effort. Work groups are planned for March 24 -27 and March 31 - April 3, with two scheduled work periods each day - from 6 AM to noon, and from 9 AM to 2:30 PM. (continued next page)
Processing takes place at Christian Aid Ministries near Ephrata. The canned chicken is used to assist those in need locally as well as internationally. This is an opportunity for you to enjoy the fellowship of working with others from various COB congregations while responding to God’s call to help those less fortunate. If you can help, please sign up on the special sheet on the bulletin board.

Open Our Eyes, Lord
Open our eyes, Lord to the spiritual truth – Through the blood of Jesus made to be -
Some of us have served you since our youth;		Repentant sinners truly set free;
Not all are gifted in the same way – Reward prepared since beginning of time -
Need to accept them, Lord, as you would, I pray. To all who receive, can be yours, mine.

Bringing them into your kingdom takes love – Our goal for the future to live for Him -
Guidance, direction from you above;			Set an example and some souls to win;
Each one’s talents, abilities are not the same – Bring them to Jesus before it’s too late -
Most pressing issue is to name your name. The other choice would be a terrible fate.
Written by the Lord and Angel
God loves us from right where we are – 12/24/07
To Him each is as a shining star;
Glowing for him in our own special way –
Gems fit for heaven on eternal day.

From the Pastor’s Desk
A friend of mine used to have a passion for reading ridiculous signs, that is, signs whose messages were impossible or (dare I say it – stupid!) unreasonable - signs like: “This door must stay closed at all times” or “do not touch burner; may be hot.” One found on the bottom of a box: “Do not turn box upside down.” One of the signs he talked about was on a huge billboard along the highway. The sign consisted of one word and then a phone number underneath. The word on the sign was “Illiterate?” and then the phone number. The point was that if you were illiterate, you could call this number for help in learning to read. But if you’re illiterate…….well, you get the point!

Unfortunately, many of us, though not in the least illiterate, really don’t know much about the Bible and what it says or how it all fits together. Hopefully the sermon series on the Bible that we are hearing this month will whet our appetite to read more and to better understand the absolute necessity of making its message a part of our everyday life and thought. Many of us have questions about life that we don’t realize can be answered by the Bible – or at least have light shed upon their understanding. And we also have questions about the Bible that seem to have no definitive answer for us. Some folks think that a book written by several different authors thousands of years ago could hardly be relative for us modern day people. But the Bible is God’s Word – the very breath of God – and its truth and relevance is just as applicable and true today at it was when it was written. There are many different opportunities for every one of us to engage in Bible study, not only on our own personal time, but also with a small group of fellow believers. Here at MACOB, we have a Sunday evening Bible study, as well as a Tuesday evening, Thursday noon, and Friday night study group. In addition, beginning the third Sunday of October another new study time will be offered. The current Sunday night study meets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. This new one will meet on the first and third Sundays of each month. The new study will center on several CD and DVD presentations by well-known authors and theologians, and discussion will follow. This study will help you see the powerful truth of the Bible with a new perspective; it will give you a new appreciation for the timeless relevance of God’s Word, and may challenge some of our culturally influenced beliefs. The Bible says in 2nd Timothy 4:2ff “be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage - with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” And in 2nd Peter 3:3 - 7 we read that in the last days scoffers will come to mislead us; scoffers who are ‘willingly ignorant’ (KJV) of God’s Word.God is warning us about our need for the truth and power of His Word to combat the evils of this world. He has given us the tools and means to withstand those evils. Opportunities abound for us to exercise our freedom to study and worship as we please. Please avail yourself of several of these opportunities for study and spiritual growth.

Please see the article elsewhere in this newsletter for more info on this new study offering. vConsider…
Are you concerned that prayer and the Bible are not in the public schools? Our church is once again participating in “Released Time.” This is a program where elementary students are legally released from school one hour per week for a time of bible study. Please see Becky Rishel, Gloria Miller or Ruth Duncan if you can help with this program. “Listeners” who listen to students’ memorized Bible verses and record their progress are needed.
vLovefeast and Communion - 10/07/07 - 6:30 PM
For many today, the Lovefeast is no longer relevant or necessary for our spiritual nurture or health. It seems an archaic, out-dated, meaningless, going-thru-the-motions of something that has lost its importance for our faith life. Why wash someone’s feet, eat a silly ‘meal,’ and drink some grape juice? What could possibly be the point of that? Didn’t that go out with the horse and buggy? Well, yes, unfortunately for many, that is all too true. But for Brethren, the traditional Lovefeast is one of those special experiences; a time when the moving of the Spirit cannot be described, only experienced. The whole series of events that make up the total time of Worship are reminders of our natural sinful state, the great gift of salvation, and our constant need to share in God’s forgiving love. Whenever the community of faith gathers around the tables of Lovefeast, we are reminded of the relationship of all disciples to one another, and to Christ himself. It is a time for quiet humility, expectant worship, transparent love, and faith renewal. The numerous distractions of modern life have drawn many away from the Lord’s Table. This celebration of Jesus’ new Covenant and His invitation to worship and commune with Him seems to have become less important to some Christians. Perhaps we need a fresh reminder of the great gift we have been offered in being invited to a place at the table of the Lord. The Deacons have made all the necessary preparations for us to have a meaningful and worshipful experience, as we obey Jesus’ command to follow His example. But the Deacons are merely the hands and feet of Jesus to facilitate the physical preparations. The invitation is from our Lord himself. How we respond to that invitation is a personal decision each of us must make.vSpecial Speaker
He is an ordained pastor in the Church of the Brethren, and during the Sunday school hour all the adult Sunday school classes will be combined as he will lead those classes in discussion. During the Worship hour, he will be preaching on other aspects of an environmental nature and our responsibilities as Christians for the care of Creation. vGeneral Board Meeting
vSo what really happened to the dinosaurs?

Have you ever asked that question? How about: Whom did Cain marry? How old is the earth? Did dinosaurs live millions and millions of years ago? Or did dinosaurs and man live together? Did Adam (and others) really live to be over 900 years old? How is that possible? Did God create the world in 6 days, or was it 6 years, or 600 years, or……? What was the world like before the flood? Did the flood really cover the whole earth? Is the theory of evolution true – has science proven it true? What does evolution really teach? Are the Bible and evolution compatible? Were there dinosaurs on the ark? What happened to the Garden of Eden? Is there a connection between Darwin and Hitler???? Do the school shootings in the US have any relevance to ‘natural selection’ – the mainstay of evolution?

Can we believe the Bible? Is there any scientific proof for Biblical claims?
